Update: Hysteroscopy (attempted!) OMG!

i had my procedure under general anaesthetic, after a biopsy in an out patient appointment. It's not bad at all, I was stressed out before with worry but I needn't have worried. At pre op they check your our bloods, take weight, height, medical history, do a wee heart trace, have a look in your mouth and have a general chat, it didn't take as long as all of that sounds lol. It was all fine and the nurses were all really supportive. On the day of my op I arrived early in the morning and was given a lovely pair of paper pants, a gown and some sexy surgical stockings to wear. I took a book to read whilst I waited as I arrived at 7.30am and was taken at 11ish, it's just your luck where you are on the list, I always seem to be last lol.

They took my bloods again, gave me a cannula and asked the usual questions and weighed me, I was shouted in and out a few times so the time passed quite quickly, I saw a few nurses then the anaesthetist and then the consultant. They come and take you to theatre and when they give you the anaesthetic you are out for the count before you know it, then like time travel you are awake again. When I woke up I was in recovery and more lovely nurses were there, they took my blood pressure and checked on me for a while and gave me lovely warm blankets to soothe my belly. I dozed in and out of sleep and then I slept in the other recovery bit for an hour or two. I went home about 5ish / 5.30, when I got home I went straight to bed and had an amazing sleep. 

You might have some bleeding / cramping for a few days after, my op was a Wednesday and I took the next two days off work and had the weekend to recover too, I was quite glad of it but I could have gone in if someone forced me to. Take some good pads with you (you can't usually use tampons for a while) and maybe some wipes to freshen up (although my hospital usually has all of that to hand).

Hi Arla, thank you so much for all this information I really appreciate it. I am concerned cos I’m having at least two procedures and possible laparoscopy as well. Did you also have that? I think I need to forget about it until next Friday. I won’t get any info until I go for my pre-op on Wednesday. My god my bf has just suggested when I go to theatre “ask them if they can trim your nasal hair while they’re at it!”. He was joking - I hope! Sometimes it’s good to joke to get through all this. I've not had the laparoscopy or loop biopsy, ive had a hysterectomy since with my womb, cervix, tubes and ovaries removed and that didn't give me much pain, the worst bit was trapped wind and constipation, which seem to be issue after a general anaesthetic, you might want to get some windeez and prune juice in just in case, don't wait too long to take action on your bowel, I waited three days and suffered until the fourth lol. 

Its good you are getting all of the procedures at once, it saves three trips. 

try and keep busy and distracted whilst you wait, it really helps to pass the time

Thanks Arla, I will definitely get those things you mentioned just in case. I usually visit my parents on Saturday mornings but told them this morning I’m meeting up with a friend so won’t be over. I know I won’t feel up to it the day after, I’m imagining I will be sore and bleeding also.. I hate lying to them but I don’t want them worrying about any of this. I will only tell them if i have to iykwim..

oh yes, I’m busy! Walking, gardening and I work from home too so that’s a bonus. Netflix too haha.

do windeez help much? I’ve tried them before I can’t remember them doing much..

Had an hysteroscopy back in May for biopsy under general anaesthetic with intention of removing polyps, had some discomfort when I came round but a dose of intravenous paracetamol took that away and was fine after that. Had diathermy loop incision some years ago to remove cells  from cervix with a local and that wasn't so bad as it sounded either. Fortunately both instances were benign, instead I go to the docs with aching knees and come out with lung cancer - always what you least expect

It's hard to say if the windeez helped or not as I got them a day after my op, but I felt an improvement and I'd rather have them than not if I have anything like that again, maybe check with the doctors before you take them, if you do take them. The prune juice was good at shifting the wind and my bowel so that alone might be enough to help, I took a glass before bed, when I eventually got some, and my bowels moved in the morning.

Hi Varmint, thank you for your reply. I’m so sorry to hear about your diagnosis- what a terrible shock that must have been. Was aching knees your only symptom? How are you getting on with treatment and have you been given the all clear? I do hope so x
