I had a radical hysterectomy through a vertical incision on Tuesday and was discharged from hospital last night so I'm now home and feeling much better about everything.
On the day of the surgery I was in theatre very early so no waiting around. I was really groggy and in pain when I woke up but mostly just slept
Day 1 I felt good. The pain wasn't too bad (I was still hooked up to everything though) and I was able to sit. I slept very well at night but my consultant had told me day 2 would be awful as the digestive system starts to kick back in.
Day 2. This was my lowest day. Everything was annoying me and I couldn't get comfortable or sleep at all. The pain wasn't too bad but i didnt want to sit, lay or walk so i was constantly shuffling between them all. My digestive system most definately kicked back in! Extremely gassy I think in total I got about 2 hours sleep.
Day 3. Knew this was my opportunity to get discharged and had all my tubing out. I made sure to be as mobile as was comfortable, eat and drink as advised. At 4pm I was finally discharged and was very tired but on a high of coming home! When I got home a few paracetamol and ibuprofen took my pain away to the best it's been. I washed my hair andanaged to get nice a comfy and watch TV for most of the evening.
The night was something else though. I don't know if it's because I was sleep depraved or just a combination of everything but I was having really vivid horrible dreams and couldn't sleep more than a few hours without waking up and I was extremely hot. I gave up with my bed after and hour and came downstairs where I had a very fractured sleep on the sofa. I did sleep though and the more I slept, the less vivid and disturbing my dreams became.
Day 4 so far so very good. I haven't taken any painkillers since before bed (around 10pm and it's now 8am) and my incision doesn't hurt much. I did have a small bout of diarrhea likely because I couldn't eat much last night but sippy at water and nibbling small spoonfuls of porridge periodically appear to be calming this down.
On the whole, I am feeling very optimistic as I write this and I hope it helps anyone else that may be on the earlier days of recovery.
Anyone else have those vivid dreams or just me! Thought I was going mad at times
Hi CJ86
It sounds like you are recovering well after your surgery, and it’s always good to get back home amongst your family and your own things. The vivid dreams can be a result of the anaesthetic, and hopefully these will subside. Just take things easy, and you should soon be healed-sounds like you’ve made a good start to recovery in any case!
