Feeling so frightened

Feeling extremely worried

was diagnosed in march with CC stage 3c

had 25 rads 5 chemo & brachytherapy.

3month pep scan is showing the original tumour has responded well and not there anymore.
But they said they are extremely concerned about my pelvis as it has lit up in multiple places there.
The worrying thing is that I had a ct scan a month ago and they said that that was clear so this has happened in 4 weeks so is fast. I have a lot of pain in my groin/pelvis too.
has anyone else had the same reoccurrence?
I have a meeting Friday to discuss things and further treatment.
I feel so defeated as I thought I would of beaten it.

thanks Pray

  • Hi

It’s been a while since we chatted last, but sorry to see you’re back with some concerns. Good news that the cervical tumour responded well to treatment, so that’s a positive.

I can only speak from my own experience, but the petscan can give a better picture of things than the Ct scan. Sometimes scans fail to show tiny things, but the tracer used in the pet scan will light up any suspicious areas because it will pick up any unusual activity. So it doesn’t mean that something has necessarily happened in the last 4 weeks. It may have been too difficult to detect on the Cat.

Obviously my recurrence was in my pelvis too, but the only place to light up in my petscan was the site of my original tumour which was growing again. I did have a lot of pelvic pain too.

The main thing to hold onto at the moment is that there will be a plan on Friday to discuss treatment, which will depend on exactly what they’ve seen, so try not to feel too defeated at this point. Was there spread to your lymphnodes identified before your chemoradiation?

  • Hi Wave

yes there was lymph nodes involved to start with. She said there is a few that have lit up again in pep too.

unfortunatly I didn’t understand what what’s being said. I asked should I be worried and she said she is very concerned.

I just wish they would explain in simple terms sometimes.

  • Hi again

Usually results go to an mdt again, like they do at the start of the original diagnosis, so the best plan of treatment can be discussed. So there would be all the specialists involved, including the radiologists to go through the pet scan results.

I’m sorry you didn’t understand what was being said-never be afraid to ask for things to be repeated or explained in more straightforward terms. Sometimes the medical professionals forget that as patients we don’t always understand what’s being told to us when they use jargon.

If your consultant is concerned about the scan, it unfortunately does seem that you’ll have to undergo more treatment. That’s a blow I understand all too well.

  • Yes they are having mdt meeting on Thursday. So now you explained that I understand that.
you have been through a great deal and well done to you for being so strong.
I hope I can be as strong as you too.
    will keep you updated xx

  • I’m not always strong! I have the same doubts and fears as we all do, and I was devastated when my cancer recurred as it was such a shock. But I do try to be as positive as I can be as I think that helps in general. I know what it’s like, but try not to feel defeated by this. It’s a set back, but your team will plan treatment and will get on with that as soon as is practical. Let us know how you get on when you can.
