Radical hysterectomy

Hi everyone

I had a radical hysterectomy on Tuesday, back home Saturday and been doing well. I’ve removed my dressing today as instructed and not sure how it’s supposed to look to be honest. There is also one tiny hole in the wound, is this normal? Not got my follow up appointment until 14th July

  • Hi @Clairelb and well done for getting through your surgery and being home!

You haven’t mentioned what type of surgery you had but I’m presuming it was open abdominal? If so, did you have staples? Both times I’ve been opened up abdominally and had staples I have ended up with a small hole in my wound, and you need to be careful that it doesn’t become infected.

Were you given details of who to contact in case of any issues? I phoned the ward where I’d had my surgery once for advice, but I also had district nurses calling in to take out my staples each time and check on my wound, so they did my dressings/cream for the little holes-one of the times I did have a bit of infection there. I think the best thing to do would be to call the ward where you had your surgery and see what they say.

Glad to hear you’re doing well, but remember to take it easy and be gentle in your recovery.

  • Hi Sarah

yes my surgery was a vertical incision, 9” actually. I have dissolvable stitches internally and externally. I was told to remove the dressing myself and just watch out for it looking angry and smelling funny. It appears quite dry other than the tiny hole and I feel fine, other than tired and sore obviously.

  • My holes did close up both times without issues except that one little infection I got, but it was hard for me to avoid that given the proximity of my stomas. Good that it appears dry, that sounds like there’s no infection there-mine did leak some gunge. Sounds like you’re doing really well so far. That’s a long incision to have!
