Brachytherapy

Hi gang.

I'd like to share my experience of having 1st brachy yesterday (24/03/22) . Was in hospital since 7.30am, got called into ward bout 8am, Had a chat with consultant who informed me that from Wednesday's MRI there was a significant improvement in my tumour!! #result.. had the usual chat with aneathitist who agreed as well as the spinal I would be given a mild sedative due to high anxiety! Everything was apparently textbook, although I was awake I was very unaware of my surroundings, so rods were placed and stitched into place, catheter inserted, 2 scans to ensure placement then treatment and brought to recovery. The spinal wore off quite quickly and I felt a lot of pain for which I was given analgesia (paracetamol via iv, codiene and morphine via tablet form) so although I had a lot of pain relief I felt every inch of rods being taken out and unstitched, and it only took a few minutes so not too long. Then home about 6.30pm.Iv bled quite heavily since then, found it hard to pee ( better today tho and think it ws fear) am terrified to poo today!! This is my experience only and don't want to frighten anyone as each person is individual with pain thresholds etc. But I'm glad I only have 2 more to go with all other treatments now completed xx

  • Morning Angela

Well done on getting through your first brachytherapy, and thanks for posting your experience which is very helpful for everyone.

You know what to expect now, and hopefully the last two will be easier because of that. Hope you can manage ok with the loo today-don’t be afraid to take stool softeners if you think that might help. Also, it’s easier to poo if you put your feet on a stool-knees being above hip level helps.

Hope you have a relaxing day planned today to recover.

    Sarah xx

  • Great advice Sarah, as usual.

Il try the foot stool approach. Iv more bloods and covid test today for Monday's brachy and tbh I'm too sore to socialise so a say of rest is on the cards today for me. Plus my car's gone back to finance company so it limits my social life a bit but when I'm better I will get a wee chuckaboom to get me by lol  xx

  • Such a shame about the car Angela, but tough times for you right now. We have been looking for a new, second hand car, and the prices are just mental right now, but our little Peugeot got through its mot the other week so we’re going to wait a bit. So long as it gets us to Asda and work for my partner it will do! Once you can get sorted with a wee runaround you’ll have your independence back.

I was just thinking back to what helped me after my failed hysterectomy surgery when I was scared to poo and couldn’t, so I used a stool for my feet and the softeners and was shouting for joy from the toilet! Joy

  • It's a bit like after my babies were born Sarah and you're terrified to poo...but it wouldn't be so bad if I ddnt have another 1 this Monday!! It seems so close..eeeekkk but il get thru all.of it xx

  • Oh, I remember after my first daughter was born and I had a lot of stitches. I was terrified! Eventually I took a ridiculous amount of laxatives-way more than recommended and the world fell out of my bum!

Next daughter I was told to hold a sanitary pad against my bits and that was a great tip!

It must make you nervous about going through the next treatment, but I know you’ll do it. You can almost touch the finish line now!

  • Yes Sarah iv got bad anxiety about Mondays treatment and I enquired of I could be slightly sedated when rods come out but ws told no! I cried so hard afterwards..and very shaky but I'm home relaxing and by Monday I might be so much better xx

  • Honestly, I’m not sure why you can’t have mild sedation for the rod removal. It seems quite barbaric making women go through so much. Bet if it were a bloke they’d be getting all sorts!

I think every one of us is incredibly brave.

  • I know Sarah..get everything getting them in so the process is just reversed so mild sedation should be standard! Xx

  • Exactly! And the fear and anxiety is not good for you. Of course it will be someone who’s never had this done telling you that you don’t need sedation. How would they know??

  • I'm at bloods clinic now Sarah and had a word with nursing staff..they advised to explain what I went thru and to ask for extra pain relief from the anesthetist on Monday..so il keep everything crossed xx
