Hello, I am 48 and have today been diagnosed with primary breast cancer with secondary in the bone and liver. The breast cancer is very small and I was told it would have been exceedingly difficult to pick up via normal checking - this however has not stopped myself from beating myself up. As it was this way it meant that the first clue there was anything amiss was a dull ache in my right hand side which started a month ago, which I got checked out with a CT scan and the rest is history. I had no other symptoms. To find out that I have cancer, that I missed it, that it has spread and that it is advanced has left me in a very very dark place. I am wondering whether anyone can tell me of anything hopeful as I am struggling and am very frightened. In terms of treatment after my ovaries are removed I am going to be put onto ribociclib. Does anyone have any experience of this? Huge thank you for any advice and thoughts in advance
Hello Maria
i was diagnosed with breast cancer back in September 2021 so a year ago nearly within 2 weeks of being diagnosed with breast cancer and having other tests I was told it had spread to my bones I to went to a very dark place
however nearly a year on and with lots of reading and building a routine I am having much more hope there are lots of women out there living with secondary’s like me and you
there are a few support groups that I have found helpful that are for people with secondary’s I also listen to positive podcasts on people living with other cancer that have helped me
I would say it takes time it’s taken me a year to start to accept the diagnosis so give yourself love and care I tended to be hard on myself but I think that’s because I was scared to give up Macmillan do have a counselling service I have found this helpful to come to terms with my diagnosis

Hi Maria,
welcome to the club that nobody wants to join! We all really do know how it feels, so you can be open on this site. Not very active though but there are several surprisingly supportive groups onFacebook which are. 2nds together is a good example.
Ribociclib is a relatively new and effective drug ( which is very expensive); most people find it easy to cope with and can get on with their normal ish life! I am on a similar drug called palboci and so far it has worked pretty well for ten months.
that keeps going! I have multiple liver and bone mets and I have felt much better since taking it.
Give yourself time; a bc dx is bad enough, but to get a SBC dx at the same time is unimaginable.

Hi Maria K
The dark place you find yourself in will get better. It will take time and it isn't an easy road but the despair won't last forever. It is an awful diagnosis but there are some very positive stories of people living with secondaries for many years - there is a thread on this forum.
Don't be hard on yourself - your medical team said the primary would have been very difficult to pick up. It is a very frightening time for you and we have all been there, imagining the worst. Although not curable, secondary BC can be treatable and many are encouraged to see this as a chronic disease.
Take care of yourself - maybe give the helpline a call when you feel you are really struggling. It's OK to feel this way - no one expects/wants to hear those words.
