Hi  all - I'm an 11-year BC survivor and am currently 52 and have been on this site for 7 years. I was ER+/PR+ with a Grade 3 tumor, no lymph node involvement and had a double mx with reconstruction. I opted out of chemo at the last minute because my oncotype DX was 8 and my tumor turned out to be smaller, which took me from Stage 2 to 1b. Three years later, I had a hysterectomy because of an abnormal growth on my ovary, but all has been fine since - other than the terrible effects of menopause. About 8 months ago I had a lump in the original breast, which thankfully turned out to be a benign fat necrosis. Now in the last 6 weeks or so I've had a number of lumps and thickness appear around my nipple. I obviously don't have a lot of feeling and did not do nipple conservation, but I feel a tightness in that side. I have an ultrasound tomorrow but was wondering if anyone has had similar symptoms and what the outcome was. This certainly feels much different than the situation 8 months ago. Thank you so much for any feedback!

  • Hi , I don’t have the experience you are looking for but as no one has responded to you (probably because they don’t either) I have so that I can bump your post back up to the top where somebody who has gone through similar to you might be there now and see it.

Also wondering how your ultrasound went - hopefully it was all good news. X

Hi GodWilling - thank you so much for responding! I really appreciate it. The good news is, the radiologist is deeming these new lumps as fat necroses like the first one so felt a biopsy isn’t necessary but recommending i go back in 3 months. While that may be a relief I’m still quite unsettled. I’m not an alarmist and after all am 11 1/2 years out but everything I’ve read including research says these normally appear within less than 5 years of surgery and typical criteria including a recent trauma related to necrosis doesn’t fit me. Anyway, I’m just struggling with why these are appearing so far down the road but will stay vigilant. Of course I’m concerned with mis-diagnosis which is why I’m curious if anyone has experienced a like situation. Thanks again for following up!

  • Hi , I think breast fat necrosis can also occur for no reason but I completely understand why this would concern you, it would concern any of us.

What did your doctor say might be the cause of breast fat necrosis after so long? Also I can't imagine you are the only person your doctors will have come across with possible necrosis this long after surgery so I would ask if they know of others and what it turned out to be for them.

I would also post your question on the main breast cancer forum as that is much busier and more likely to be seen by someone who has had a similar experience.  Click HERE for the main breast cancer forum.

In the mean time keep a close eye out for any further changes and go back if you notice any.

I agree with you that I can’t be the only one. Just seems odd. And with Implants it makes detecting anything that much harder. Thanks again!
