I everyone, I've just got my appointment through to see my oncologist for the first time and im not sure what to expect my surgeon told me the first appointment is just a meet and greet and the second appointment is the big one when they do the mapping and discuss the length of treatment etc

Is this how it works?, is there anything I should be asking? The annoying thing is it's not at my local hospital ive got to travel to a different town and unfamiliar hospital not going to lie im more nervous about having radiotherapy than I was about the operation any advice much appreciated thanks

  • Hi Charden . I can understand your anxiety it’s only natural . I take it from reading your post that you’ve already had your surgery ? . The appointment with your oncologist is just to review your diagnosis and give you the information  about the treatment ahead . There is really no need to be afraid of the radiotherapy . At the first appointment they will get you to lie down and then with lasers they will work out where they will position the beam . As for the radiotherapy itself it’s completely painless and very quick . You may be asked to hold your breath for up to 20 seconds while they do their thing . It’s easier than you think,  just practice a bit until your treatment starts . What’s in your head is far more frightening than the actual treatment so please try not to stress too much . I hope this will help you and I wish you love and lucK going forward x

  • I had my first oncology appointment yesterday. Surgery was 5 weeks ago. This meeting was to discuss my next treatment which is chemo (radiotherapy to follow after). I was expecting just a discussion but after confirming my chemo of 3 EC and 12 paclitaxel I was then sent for height, weight, blood test and ECG. I had an echocardiogram 2 days earlier for the oncologist to check my heart health before treatment. I came out feeling upbeat about next steps. It is the waiting in-between that is hardest.

  • Thank you so much, that's really helpful info

Yes i had a therapeutic mamoplasty 6 weeks ago so radiotherapy is the next step its good to know its nothing to worry about my mind is racing away from me

  • Thanks for reply, yes the waiting is always the worse part I'm 6 weeks post surgery i was told I'd could wait 4 months for radiotherapy so it much quicker than I thought it would be

  • I saw the oncologist 4 weeks ago for results of oncotype DX test. No chemo needed but 5 doses of radiation.

Had my CT scan & markings done last week. Have to lie still for about 2 mins then they do 3 dots of a tattoo, one on centre of breasts & one either side, all very quick.

Like you I had to go to a different city, Glasgow . That was the worst with the traffic etc.

Start on 18th Dec 11 weeks post lumpectomy. Hope all goes well.

  • Thank you for reply yes the travelling is going to be a pain but hopefully I won't have to have too many sessions
