Hi everyone, I’m currently on letrazole and really struggling with the side effects, hot flushes, insomnia etc. I’m getting branded generic versions currently and the side effects seem to differ in intensity depending on which version I get. For instance Accord gives me dreadful night sweats, the Teva version is dreadful insomnia.

Has anyone any experience of switching to Femara and did this improve things? If it did how did you persuade your GP to make the switch?

Hope this makes sense as I’m on my fourth night without sleep. Grateful for any input.

  • Hi ,

sorry to hear you’re having issues. I tried a few different brands before I found one that suited me. I asked both the doctors and pharmacy if I could only be prescribed that brand from then on, which they were happy to do. I know a few people have tried taking a Letrozole at night so the sweats don’t keep them up . I haven’t really suffered with bad night sweats so I couldn’t tell you if that does help or not.  For me, diet seems to help keep a lot of the side effects at bay. I’ve been on Letrozole for a year  now and the only bad side effect is constipation if I don’t eat a lot of fruit and veg. Speak to your doctor and explain how it’s impacting your life. I hope you get sorted. Good luck !

  • Thanks for responding. I think asking for one brand is a great idea. It’s the inconsistency of having different brands that makes the side effects hard to manage -because they all have a different level of intensity. At least with one brand I could work the best time to take it to minimise problems.

Hope things keep going well for you.

  • Thank-you.
Yes I agree, it’s so silly we get given different ones. Try the same one for a couple of month & see if that helps . I really do hope you get sorted. I’m sure you will. This journey is hard enough without side effects!

  • Hi

I was on anastrozole for 5 years and the same principle applies.  Teva and Accord were the same coatings.  It's the coatings that makes all the difference.  I was ok on these 2, but consillient gave me horrendous joint aches.  When I googled what was in the tablets that the NHS could provide (at a reasonable cost), I went through their coatings and found that consillient was a LOT different to Teva and Accord.

If you do this with Letrozole, if you find one tablet that doesn't affect you as much as the others, ask you doctor to write on the prescription "'such and such brand only" - I did that with my doctor and was able to stick to the same brands that didn't affect me for the whole time.

    Kindest wishes, Lesley

  • Thanks I think that seems to be the way to go

  • I’m taking accord which I find ok.  Minimal heat in the bedroom, fan on during the night when I had night sweats.  I still get some, but keeping the room cool helped me.  My night sweats did decrease over time.

i went on an nhs sleep therapy course online.  Sleepstation. It was great.  Key takeaways for me that really helped me..

    1. Go to bed at 12.15 or when tired. Seems I only need 7 hrs sleep nowadays

    2. bedroom has no light when trying to sleep

    3. if you can’t sleep, get up move around, go pee or make a cuppa but don’t stress

    4. Write notes before bed if thoughts are racing, so you don’t need to think about them

Hope you get sorted with a good brand.
