Deciding whether to have a Mastectomy

I am posting on behalf of my 82 year old Mum. She has recently been diagnosed with breast cancer in 1 breast, there is one 20mm lump and another very small one. The Consultant recommended a Mastectomy followed by Letrazole medication afterwards. Her cancer is Hormone receptive. My Mum is a Carer and has a number of health conditions herself and is nervous about surgery and recovery at her age, but the Consultant didn't outline any other options or choices. Does anyone have any advice?

Thank you!

  • Hello,  did the consultant mention the possibility of a lumpectomy followed by radiation?  I don’t know what health conditions your Mum has and I certainly know that it is not an easy decision.
I was 71 when diagnosed and finally ended up having bilateral lumpectomies with radiation to both breasts and have been on anastrazole for 3 1/2 years so 1 1/2 years to go.  I was fit and healthy with no chronic illnesses.
Breast cancer has challenges at every age.
    Wish your Mum the best.

  • Hi not sure how much help this will be, but I had a double mastectomy and lymph node check about 5 years ago. It was relatively straightforward, and I didn't need drains. I stayed in for, I think, just one night. Don't remember it as being painful, although I took all the offered painkillers.  I do recommend doing all the post op exercises. I did, and I have very good arm reach. I am in my 70s. My experience was influenced by covid, but read my profile if you want.

I wish your mum all the very best x
