Hello

Has anyone had any issues with PICC line dressing. I have started reacting to dressing and have gone through number of them. Started with the regular one and now I'm on the 4th one I think, which is more just like a fabric plaster. But if I start reacting to this one I don't think there is anymore I could be offered.

Will my PICC need to come out if they won't be able to use any dressing and cover it up?

Has anyone experienced this?

Thank you

  • Hi

I had 6 rounds of chemotherapy, finished in June this year.

I also had a pic line,  made the decision to have my pic line taken out after chemo round no 4, due my skin reactions, skin blisters and v, sore.

Had last 2 rounds of chemotherapy via canula in the back of my hand, was totally fine no issues.

    1. My chemotherapy sessions were every 21 days.
  • Can you try to unstick your plaster on the edges, so it's not touching the blisters. But make sure you don't uncover the PICC itself tho.  And then tomorrow go and have it done. Or have they given you a 24 HR hotline you could ring , they will advise you and will be able to book you into the hospital for a redress tonight. Or there is alway the A&E. You don't want those blisters to get any worse.

  • The anti histimine has really helped and the itching has stopped. I phoned the 24-7 number and they said it should be fine to sort it tomorrow but keep an eye on it.

  • That is what I had. It is manageable and I kept a diary of side effects and what I did to relieve them which really helped as you can forget from one cycle to the next. That advice was given to me from a local cancer charity and it really helped me to keep on top of it all.
The cycles are a bit of a slog at times but listen to your body, rest when you need to and don’t be afraid to use the helpline or the chemo nurses for advice and reassurance. I found them invaluable. Hope your journey goes well. There is light at the end of the tunnel! X
