Tamoxifen and monthly flow.

Hi all, I started Tamoxifen last week and I read all the things that can happen except what’s happening to me. Last Feb was the last time I saw my period. I had no pre-menopausal symptoms and my gyno said I fall into that lucky 20% category of women and it’s quite normal. Good riddance to my monthly cycle, I hated it anyway.

I started taking tamoxifen last week and yesterday I got my period. Except the pain wasn’t normal. It was excruciating and I thought I was going to give birth to my uterus.

But it’s the amount of blood I’m concerned about. It’s a lot. Like freddy krueger is living in my uterus and having fun with it.

a month before starting I asked my gyno for a full check up to make sure everything is good to go as I don’t like surprises. She said I was healthy.

I thought tamoxifen stops your period? So why has it done the opposite to me? It’s like my period is on some revenge mission.

  • Hi  , sorry you’re having this worry so soon in your hormone therapy journey.

I’d just say first that any post menopausal bleeding needs investigation. I’ve had it a few times pre cancer, had polyps which were thankfully benign.

I’m on a different hormone zapper (Anastrozole) but I did have some bleeding. Also I had dreadful ‘flooding’ during my ‘natural’ menopause. I was a teacher and had to warn any teaching assistants that I might have to just go if I felt that rush. Would leak hideously despite double tampons and heavy flow pads (sorry if tmi!). So firstly I’m wondering if your menopause isn’t quite done yet? My last year of them had big gaps between periods which made it all the more awkward. I counted myself ‘finished’ for good when there was a year since the last. I’m not sure if you’ve been over or under a year ie was it Feb 24 or 25?
I had some really light spotting when I’d been on Anastrozole for a couple of years. GP took it very seriously and sent me for an ultrasound. Thankfully there was nothing untoward and it hasn’t happened again.

Please do get it checked out, maybe the tamoxifen has jump started a mega period. A friend had similar issues further into her tamoxifen journey - a very worrying time for her but after investigations all was well. She finished her 5 years on it without further issues. Love and hugs, HFxx

  • Thanks  ! It was this past Feb 2025. So I haven’t hit menopause. Initially I thought it stopped from the stress of the cancer diagnosis, surgeries and strong radiation but it never returned and honestly I didn’t miss it. My hormones have forever made me into a moody cow and last month, I felt better than I ever have. Cancer gone, no more hormonal fluctuations, bloating a mere memory. Except tamoxifen brought that all back. I‘ve got my quarterly appointment with my doctor next month so I will have a chat with her. Unfortunately because of the cancer being what it was, I doubt she can give me anything to stop my period. Maybe there’s something homeopathic that won’t interfere with tamoxifen.
