Paclitaxel

I finished my 3rd EC chemotherapy 3 weeks ago. I was sick during 2 and 3 treatment, but otherwise fine.

I had my first paclitaxel today and I was expecting it to be easier than EC, however about 15 minutes into treatment I developed really bad chest pains, and treatment had to be stopped. They said they will give me the hydrocortisone first next week to see if that avoids the reaction again. I am so worried about my reaction and wonder if anyone else has experienced this and gone on to have successfull treatment.

  • Hi   that sounds quite scary, sorry to hear this and it's not wonderful you're worried.  I didn't have the same chemo as you, and didn't have any reaction, but I just wanted to suggest you have a chat with the lovely folks here at Macmillan who might be able to provide some additional support. You can call them on 0800 808 0000. Best of luck for next week.

  • Hi Lily Anne

I had 3 EC and then 9 weekly Paclitaxel.

EC was awful and took a real toll on my body. I lost all my hair, sickness, dizziness, tiredness, extreme weight loss and everything that comes with it.

I was told that Paclitaxel was slightly better and easier but, on my 1st Pacli dose I vomited and felt hot. They stopped the infusion and then restarted at a slower pace. I also found that the anti histamine and steroids they give before the dose made me nauseous and sleepy so they slightly reduced those doses and infused the Pacli at a slower rate and I was fine up until the last 3 when the only symptoms I had was tiredness and nausea during the treatments.

I only had 3 weeks break from EC into Paclitaxel treatment and I read that could cause some symptoms as the body is still recovering from  the onslaught of the "red devil". All I can suggest is talk to you Oncologist and the nursing team at the day unit. Mine were absolutely fantastic

I hope it gets better for you

  •   Hi thank you for your reply. I am hoping things are better for me on Thursday. The team have consulted the oncologist, so hopefully they have a plan in place. I will let you know how I get on.
