Bleeding from lumpectomy wound

Hi all, I had a lumpectomy amd node biopsy over a week ago and the nurse took the dressing off yesterday, the consultant and nurse were happy with the wounds and said they were healing well, however I have had to stick another dressing on today as the breast wound is bleeding, not oozing out but just enough to go transfer onto clothes/bra. Can I ask how long you any of you bled for? Thanks

  • Hi my wound didn't bleed at all, but everyone heals at different rates. As long as it isn't weeping or showing signs of infection you should be ok. Do you have a specialist breast nurse you can contact just to put your mind at rest? Always ask them no matter how trivial you think the question is. I hope you heal soon.

  • Hi yeah I spoke to her yesterday, think she said as long as wasn't showing signs of infection would be OK. She said to put a dressing back on but was a bit reluctant to say so as she said it would keep it moist. I just wondered other people's timescales as I would like to take the dressing off to let it heal better but don't want to take it off too soon again if still bleeding.  Think I'll keep on another couple days. Thanks

  • My wound bled slightly for about a week and also leaked fluid from a seroma that formed in my armpit. The nurse syringed the fluid off and was happy with the wound as it wasn't infected. I kept a dressing on until the bleeding stopped completely with no issues.

  • Ok thanks for the info. It will be nearly 2 weeks since the surgery but don't think there's been any fluid, just some blood. It's also been much sorer since the first week so not sure if I'm overdoing it. I'll try using the arm less and hopefully the bleeding stops soon.

  • Hope all goes well but don't hesitate to ask your breast nurse for reassurance if you are still worried in a day or so
