Hey my mums just had a single masectomy which also ended up going in the chest wall she’s ended up with two drains and a 3 day hospital stay I’ve just got her home. Just wondering how long it took others to recover from this and if the high emotions are normal she just can’t bring her self to look at the moment which I’ve assumed is normal. Any advice I would be greatly appreciate.

  • Very very normal. It took me about a week before I could properly look at myself and I had a reconstruction. So much of who we are is tied into our physical appearance and the drugs etc can make you very emotional too. I slept pretty much all day the first couple of days home and found moving around hard. Just let her know that you are there and encourage her to eat and drink to the best of her ability. In my reading it encourages you to take a look every day as well as feel it but if she can't bear the thought of it I wouldn't push her at least not until she is feeling a bit better. She will be having appointments with the dressings team so she will have to confront it then and they can really support with this. Sometimes it's easier to take help from a non family member.

  • Thank you so much for the reply and for the advice she is sleeping a lot at the moment which sounds similar to yourself and reassured me. The district nurse did come in today to check the wound but as soon as they unbuttoned her night shirt full in tears and she couldn’t look but I’m guessing will take time. Thank you so much for replying nice to know what my mums doing is similar to others
