Recommendation for moisturisation during radiotherapy

Hello to all,

I know many of us are receiving, or about to receive radiotherapy treatment.

We are advised to use non perfumed moisturiser. I took the time to find a natural product and found Balmonds.

Across the products I am using, the ingredients are natural plant extracts of chamomile, calendula, olive, hemp, chickweed, shea butter, mint, and lavender.

In the morning, early evening and before bed I use their daily moisturiser on the chest wall, under arm and breast.

Just after the radiotherapy treatment, in the changing room, I use the cooling moisturiser on the same areas.

So far, my skin is beautifully soft, supple and well moisturised. I am not experiencing any irritation or burning.

I don't usually write stuff like this, but as we all know, these are testing times, and we cherish the support given to us. So I thought I would share this radiotherapy angel with you all.

Love and blessings xxx

  • I’m sure it’s useful for those approaching or going through radiotherapy to have those recommendations.

When I was starting my radiotherapy I received a parcel from a friend with some organic pure aloe vera gel. She told me another friend of hers had sworn by it. To begin with I was using E45 lotion once or twice daily which is great as a moisturiser but then once the burning sensations kicked in I found the aloe vera wonderfully soothing. I used it whenever I felt the skin ‘heat’ and slathered loads on. It was a god-send!

Also want to share that to begin with I was really squeamish about massaging my scars but I wanted to overcome that so I was very gentle but determined and I used that minute or so every morning, sitting at my dressing table applying moisturiser as a minute of self-love and making friends with my scars.

  • I can honestly say, I haven't experienced any burning sensations, and I put it down to the products I have mentioned here.

Straight after each treatment my skin is a little red, and in the changing room I use the cooling cream liberally, as I said. It's a proper angel in a bottle.

  • I'm not having radiotheraphy yet I'm 5 weeks post op but have you tried moo goo I've been using on my scar it's lovely and they do loads of different ones xx

  • I've also used MooGoo and its been excellent.  I'd previously used Aveno cream without probelm but post surgery my arm and breast just wouldn't tolerate it and then I found MooGoo. Wonderful stuff and no nasties either.

  • I agree with TrudIn's friend - aloe vera gel is great!  I had radiotherary 7 years ago for 15 sessions.  It wasn't until the last week that I got any radio burns.  In hindsight, on the last week I wouldn't have put the gel under my breast as that's where the skin broke down and it was caused by my bra strap rubbing against the skin where the gel was.  (I had to drive over 30 miles for my radiotherapy, and 40D, so I had to wear a bra!)

I hope it continues being good for you.

    Best Wishes, Lesley

  • Moogoo is amazing . I still use it . Neals yard do a professional non scented moisturiser , they use it at one of the cancer charities for massages .

  • I had 15 sessions last August ,and used  Aveeno cream had no problems with my skin  .My brother had 6 weeks of daily  radiotherapy 7 years ago for throat cancer at Mount Vernon Hospital ,and the nurses there recommended Aveeno ( the blue one ).By the end of the 30 sessions his neck just looked like he had a shaving rash ,so I just stuck to Aveeno and was happy with that
