Tamoxifen mood side effects

Hey,

I've been on tamoxifen (and zoladex) for about 4 weeks now and I'm really struggling with the side effects. There's the fatigue, which I'm slowly starting to manage, but the mood swings are so bad just now. I burst into tears as soon as anything goes even slightly wrong. But could be flying high and excited moments before. Okay, I'm dealing with a very emotive situation (diagnosed stage 4 almost 2 months ago, getting benefits sorted, so much uncertainty) but even then this feels really really extreme. I'm just wondering about other people's experiences?

Thanks

BoF xx

  • Tamoxifen can be horrible. I didn't tolerate it well as it gave me severe leg cramps as well as making me feel extremely flat and low. I did try alternatives but they didn't help either. What I would say is please don't give up with it. I did and how 10 years later have the cancer back in my back, which can't be cured. Please find a way to tolerate it. Try ginger and turmeric infusions each morning to help with inflammation maybe and try all things again and again. Many of these meds become more tolerated by the body over time. I know it can be horrible but if I could go back and learn to tolerate it- I would. Good luck and I hope it gets easier for you x I hope others will have more information for you on how to tolerate it.

  • Thanks  . Sorry to hear that you've had a reoccurrence.  Cancer just sucks. I'm stage 4 so really need to find a way to tolerate tamoxifen if it is keeping things stable. Sigh. Will try ginger and turmeric, thank you. My cancer is also in my bones - spine, ribs, breast bone and pelvis. Thankfully got the pain under control now. Wishing you all the best with your treatment. xx

  • I’m sorry to hear what you are both going through and hope you are able to find things which help. However, please be aware that there is some research showing turmeric might reduce the efficacy of tamoxifen so perhaps check with your oncologist first. x

  • Damn... thanks for the info  . It seems that most of the helpful things for menopause stuff do work in a way that compromises treatment.
