How long to wait for mastectomy

Hi MissP84, I finished chemo on the 9th of July and had my mastectomy and reconstruction mid October. I think the wait is due to both breast surgeon and plastic surgeon needing to be available. I ended up going away on holiday while I was waiting, which was a great distraction. Xx

Oh that is a long time...yea my breast surgeon and plastic surgeon are at different hospitals as well, which I guess will be more difficult.

A holiday whilst waiting sounds like a great idea, might just do a wee trip to get away from everything for a bit

I had the same thing with surgeons at different hospital, they do tend to travel around a bit. Also some seem to work in the private sector too. I'm hoping I won't have to wait too long to have the reduction on my healthy breast, I'm a bit lopsided at the moment. I wish you well on your journey moving forward. Xx

Hi there. The nhs had targets they have to meet. If you google cancer treatment waiting times it’ll show how long. It’s either 31 days or 62 days. Treatment should begin within 31 days from date of diagnosis. Mine is 35 days, so quite close to the timeframes x

Yea I had read 31 days, I was diagnosed on the 3rd Dec, so we've hit the 31 days and nothing...however I did have to have a further biopsy, so I wondered if the clock kinda started again from the results of that.

Do you know the difference between the 31 and 62 at all? 

My bcn said if I needed extra tests then it can go up to 62 days. I needed a ct scan, that’s why mine is over. 62 days is from the date you were first seen in hospital. Was it a mammogram recall? Or 2 week pathway? 

It was 2 week pathway.

Based on my dates, I should have op end of Jan, just need to wait to hear soon hopefully

Do you have the contact details for the bcn? When I had results of my biopsy they gave me the date then. If I was you I’d contact your bcn and ask for a date. Expect they. have different processes in different hospitals but you need a date asap x

If you’re having breast reconstruction with plastic surgeon then sometimes it may be a little longer than a mastectomy on its own as you need the plastic surgeon but it should still be within these timescales m x
