Chemo reactions

Hi, I have triple positive breast cancer and have started a cycle of 6 lots of chemotherapy every 3 weeks. During my first cycle I had a panic attack before the chemo was administered. My second cycle I had a reaction to one of the drugs. My third cycle was incident free. My fourth cycle I had a panic attack and refused the chemotherapy. This week I went to try again for my fourth cycle and had a reaction to the other chemotherapy drug I have.  It was very late in the day and was told that my therapy would not go ahead as there was no longer enough time left.
I have never suffered from panic attacks before and was taken back by my reaction to chemotherapy especially considering it didn’t affect me too much. The process of having it was pain free and I only had mild symptoms. The idea of having another panic attack or reaction is much worse than the chemo it’s self. I have been prescribed lorazepam to help with the anxiety however that hasn’t helped. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

  • No not at all similar, I was ridiculously sanguine. But I can understand where you are coming from. My other used to say it is the unintelligent that lack fear and caution. Things that might help.

    1. If there is a Macmillan or Maggie centre near go to them. Macmillan can offer lots of therapies that can help. I had acupuncture for example. They also have support groups.

    2. Would your chemo ward let you come on with a relative or friend for support. Pre COVIDy daughter sat with me through all my sessions.

3 Take with you good books and feel good tapes. Make it into an indulgence treat yourself session. - whatever goodie or reward you want, if at all possible have it.

    • Ask for morning appointments and extra space and time to get yourself together. If you find it difficult to ask for things get someone to advocate for you.

If you've no Macmillan or Maggie centres try googling local cancer support. You need a cancer buddy

Finally you will come through this. A big hug xxxxx

  • Sorry for many typos and I forgot to say take any relaxing or calming meds offered. My chemo nurses and my GP were all very supportive during my treatment. X
