Zoledronic Acid Infusions

I have had all 6 of my zoledronic acid infusions.  When I agreed to this treatment I was told that it could be for 3 to 5 years.  The 6 infusions take me to 3 years.

I asked my breast surgeon yesterday and he said that they only give the infusions for 3 years.  That there is no benefit for anymore.

Has anyone had a different reply?

My breast cancer was TNBC stage 1 grade 3.

Thanks for your help

  • Hi

When I was diagnosed with stage 1 grade 3 TNBC in April 2022 I was told by my oncologist that I would have zoledronic acid infusions for a minimum of 3 years but for 5 years if I tolerated them.

I have now had 5 infusions with no problems. However, my original oncologist retired last year and when I saw my new one just before my 5th infusion she said that the thinking now had changed and it is believed that there is no advantage to having the infusions after 3 years.

However, if I decide after my next one that I want to continue to 5 years rather than stop she's happy for me to continue.

  • Thank you that is helpful.  My breast surgeon was clear that if it was thought beneficial then I would be offered more. Sometimes it is hard to believe that there are no more treatments to have

  • I know what you mean. My first thought was that I would carry on with the treatment but now I'm thinking that if there's no real benefit wouldn't it be nicer to stop.

  • Hi, mine were initially for 3 years, so should have stopped in June 2024, but my oncologist said the protocol has now changed and is recommended for 5 years now, so I just had my 7th one. It's so confusing to get such different advice. Best wishes
