Post Mastectomy soreness

Hi All,

I had a bilateral mastectomy 10 days ago and have found it much, much easier than I could have imagined.

My question is that for the past few days I have been experiencing a lot of soreness under my arm (I had one node removed from this side) - It is a very strange feeling as most of the armpit and under arm are numb but the skin is extremely sore (it feels a bit as though it has been burnt) Is this just where the nerves endings are coming back to life? Has anyone experienced this and if so how long did it last?

The wound from the breast removals is absolutely fine - just a little bit of discomfort.

Thanks in advance

  • Hi there, I had a lumpectomy but the wound area under my arm was sore and numb for quite some time and I've had discomfort from the nerve endings. Honestly, this took a long time to feel normal and in fact even today, 3+ years on, the scar area can be uncomfortable if I put pressure on it. Hope your recovery is going well otherwise, best wishes

  • Hi NannyJ26, so pleased you hear that surgery was easier than you expected. With regards to the soreness, I had exactly that same feeling of soreness. I had my mastectomy with diep flap reconstruction in October and it took several weeks for the nerve endings to settle. Mine was actually sore down my arm as well, as far as the elbow. For me I would describe it as feeling like a carpet burn. Hopefully this issue will get better for you over time. Xx

  • Hi Irishgirl16,

Thank you for taking the time to reply. It is good to hear that this is something that can happen, I'm sorry it is still a bit of a problem for you. Apart from that my recovery is going brilliantly thanks.

    Happy New Year x

  • Dear Daisy24,

    Thanks for the message.

Like you, mine is sore almost to my elbow and you hit the nail on the head, it feels just like a carpet burn! It's good to hear that after a while it stopped as it is the only thing that is making me feel a bit miserable. Everything else has been completely manageable and what I had expected.

I hope you are doing ok and Happy New Year x

  • Hi NannyJ26

Just wanted to say it was wonderful to read your comment that your recovery is going brilliantly.

I had a lumpectomy but also experienced the carpet burn feeling at the back and inside of my arm from the SLNB. Took about three weeks or so to go for me and no issues since then.

I hope everything continues to go well for you. x

  • Thank you Eebee,

it is very reassuring to hear that yours cleared up and hasn't caused any further problems.

Thanks for you kind wishes as well x

  • I had a mastectomy & 4 lymph nodes removed just before Xmas and I have the same pain. I assumed it was normal and is all the nerves & skin sorting themselves out! But it’s annoying. Doesn’t really go away with ibruprofen. I have large seroma too - almost as large as my remaining boob. I have a post surgery appointment next week so was going to check with the surgeon then. I think it’ll just resolve itself. Hopefully! The BCN said 6 weeks minimum recovery so just waiting and healing. Best of luck!

  • Thanks Littlecaf,

Sorry to hear you have the seroma as well as the pain. Hopefully that will go away soon. I am very lucky as apart from feeling tender all over the soreness is the worst of my problems at the moment.

Hope the rest of your recovery goes well x

  • Yes same here. And numb with carpet burn feeling is exactly how I’d describe it!
