Confused as to being treated as having cancer before the biopsy results are in

I had a mammogram and was called back. They did a 3D ultrasound and felt the area. They then started talking as if it is definitely cancer and took 2 biopsies.
they said that the results will be back Tuesday am, and they want me and my husband to go back on Tuesday afternoon to make plans. How can they be so sure before the biopsy results?

  • Hello, so sorry you find yourself here. I can only speak to my experience; I was told they were confident that it was cancer at my initial appointment following mammogram and ultrasound. I was dubious they could be so sure too, but in my case they were right. But on the bright side, I've had it cut out, I'm due to start my next treatment and I have every confidence in a successful outcome - as do my doctors. Diagnosis isn't a game over situation nowadays, try to remember that :)

Try not to overthink or read the Internet, I know it's easier said than done! Best of luck for Tuesday xx

  • Hi

I was diagnosed with breast cancer after a routine mammogram. Called back within 2 weeks of the mammogram because they could see an area of calcification which they needed to check.

While checking me for that a tiny lump was discovered which hadn't been picked up on the original mammogram. After a manual examination and then an ultrasound they said they were confident that, unfortunately, it was cancer. I guess they're really experienced at knowing what a cancerous lump looks like.

I had two biopsies, one that day and one the following day, and an appointment was made for me to attend a few days later when it was confirmed to be breast cancer.

After surgery, chemo and radiotherapy I'm now back enjoying life.

  • Hi

Just to add my experience like the other replies, at the clinic I had mammogram and ultrasound and biopsies were taken. They told me there and then that they were suspicious and they were right. A dear friend of mine was recalled after a mammogram. She had a mastectomy and that was all, it was caught nice and early.

    Good luck.

  • Thank you for taking the time to reply. At least I don’t have too long to wait! It’s always afterwards that you think of loads of questions.x

  • Hi, same as the others. I had mammogram, ultrasound and biopsies after being referred after I found a lump. I was told that day it was cancer. I went back the following week and they told me what type of cancer it was and what the treatment plan would be (chemo, surgery and then radiotherapy which I’m due to start in about 4/5 weeks).

  • Yep same here

mammogram and ultrasound with biopsy but told then and there that 9/10 times what they’d seen turns out to be BC

the biopsy will tell them what kind/ grade of Breast cancer . The scans will give them a rough idea of size/ extent.

but this is all getting ahead of ourselves. You will get a better picture when you go back. You will be fine. There’s great treatments now. The worst bit is where you are - the waiting…… that’s rough and scary and honestly stay away from Google

    best of luck to you

  • Sorry I replied to what’s next by mistake!!
