Newly diagnosed, will be having mastectomy. All of a dither about reconstruction. Running and swimming are very important to me both as fitness and social activities.
Anyone have any comments about sport with or without reconstruction? (i'm 61 size 14 and AA/A cup so I'm heavy for a runner and generally I'm a back of the pack girl running halfs and 10ks)
I had a large lumpectomy and reconstruction (B cup). I asked my team about fitness and swimming after as important to me too and they said once all the treatment had finished and I felt healed up it should be fine with a good sports bra. I'm just at the end of treatment now so not fully healed yet but so glad I went for the reconstruction as my chest feels much more "even".
Hi Jeanne
i had exactly the same feelings as you…as I (used to!) do triathlons and love swimming running & cycling … I’m not very good! but I love it! I have her2+ & had to have chemo then a mastectomy…. My op was just over 5 weeks ago and before it, I had to make the decision whether or not to have an immediate reconstruction… (silicone implant as not enough fat for the other method)… I was really torn as I wanted to get back to training as soon as possible but I didn’t know if I’d be happier flat!! Ahhh it’s such a decision !! I spoke to a few ladies I knew - some had had a reconstruction, some opted for flat and on end, I decided to at least try the implant .. My thought process was that although I could have it done at a later stage - did it want another major op later down the line… would I regret not trying the implant.. I’m not very big breasted either so was hoping implant would be ok..
anyway - initially I was in two minds as to whether I’d done the right thing .. it does feel odd and it’s still numb in places & I’ve had some swelling & had to have it drained but now I feel it’s settling down.. & I’m glad Ive done it…. Having a bra fitting in Maggies for a proper sports bra & nurse says I can start swimming after the 6th week post op which is next week.. I’ll prob wait a little longer to start running as it’s still a little tender ..but will start back on the bike next week..
whatever you decide, my advice would be to do the exercises they give you to make sure you get the movement back in your chest/shoulder .. I’ve found my range of movement after 5 weeks is good … I’ll let you know how the first swim back goes!!
message again if you want any further info!
good luck with the op & the rest of your treatment x
