Hello, I’m 19 days post op WLE. Healing ok. Advised to sleep propped up initially but can’t remember how long they said for. I’m wondering how long have others done this and when did you get back to sleeping in normal position?

  • Hello and welcome to the forum.  Pleased your op went ok and you are healing well.  I had a WLE and sentinel biopsy.  I slept with a V pillow for about two weeks afterwards.  I sleep normally on my front, so that has taken a while to be able to sleep like that again.  Could sleep on my right side after about 8 weeks, as had to have another lumpectomy.  But all ok now.  All depends on how you sleep and how you feel to be honest.  Wish you well xx

  • Took me ages to be comfortable sleeping on my side.  I used the heart shaped pillow as a support, even now I am careful turning onto my side.

  • Sorry I can't answer your question BUT I was hoping you might be able to advise on how you slept upright. I'm due my surgery in a couple of weeks so want to get everything I may need. Thanks

  • Hello, borrowed my sister’s recliner sofa which really helped. I also had a mastectomy pillow which I could put on my front and it went all the way round to my back to protect the breast and the wound. I’ve also used the pillow when in the car, I found it useful.

I’m now back in my bed 2 days ago but still sleeping slightly propped up with a few pillows and will gradually transition to sleeping on my side as I heal. I have an appointment with the BCU tomorrow so I will ask for more guidance on this.

    Hope this helps. Best wishes

  • My husband moved out so I could have more room and arrange the pillows so I could sleep on my back without rolling over.  I slept on a few pillows to keep slightly elevated x

  • Hi  , I wasn’t advised re sleeping position but found I was on my back for ages! I propped up initially with lots of pillows and a single duvet wedged by my side as I didn’t want anything to move, then settled into sleeping on my back with an extra pillow. Craved getting back to my normal side sleeping but it just didn’t feel right for many months. In the end I just accepted that I’d be a back sleeper for a while until it felt ok. Much longer than I’d anticipated though. I think it depends hugely on individual wound positions, size and depth of incision. Other things that helped were a flat pillow under my knees and one to rest my arm on, on the operated side. All back to normal now but it did take a while.
    Love and hugs, HFxx

  • Hi Wave

My Mum bought me a lovely  v shaped pillow which was lovely and comfortable but quite expensive.

I found it frustrating trying to stick to sleeping on my back or ‘Good side’ but you get used to it.

Ever since op I have been listening to sleep podcasts to help me switch off.

After about 4/5 weeks I asked if I could sleep on both sides and they said it would be fine.
