Hi, I had a lumpectomy and sentinel lymph node biopsy just over 2 weeks ago. For the last week I’ve had bad nerve pain I,e. burning and tenderness over my shoulder blade as well as my breast and underarm. The rest of the area is numb. It is painful when I move as my clothes brush the area. Is it common to get this kind of pain after this operation? Has anyone else experienced this?
I spoke to my breast care nurse and she said the nerve pain was to do with the surgeon moving breast tissue around. Is this pain temporary? She advised me to get pain relief that works, as OTC general painkillers don’t. My doctor has given me Amitriptyline which is for nerve pain this isn’t helping much with the pain either, it’s making me drowsy which helps me to sleep at night.
I’m feeling really down as I thought any pain from the operation would be less by now and I’m dreading the thought of adding to my pain when I start radiotherapy.
I bought a soft post surgery bra from M & S. My key worker told me to keep it on at night to prevent swelling. I hate wearing a bra at night. I kep it on but unfastened it, it still provided some support. Walking 5 times each week for 30 mins us recommended. I even walked the day after my op. I was still high from getting through it and the anaesthetic drugs I think. Distraction and trying to keep a positive mind set us crucial or was for me. Waiting for the results over Christmas hard, it added an extra week. My arm moves fine now.
Hi, I am in exactly the same situation. Back in on 29th. It’s easier keeping positive during the day, it’s the wakeful nights that I am struggling with. Wishing you a very successful second surgery - stay strong.
Aww hope it goes well it can be a mind f^,€ at points, had my first full meltdown couple days ago it’s hard being happy smiling and positive all the time.
Thank you for your help and advice.
. I went back to the hospital today and my nurse is really supportive. They said I can go ahead with self massage now so I might try bio oil. I can’t take anti inflammatory tablets because I have asthma and paracetamol don’t help. They did suggest using the ibuprofen type gel and that’s making it more bearable and a heat pack on my back so it has improved.
My doctor prescribed Amitriptyline which helped me to sleep, but I couldn’t function the next day and I still had the pain which was even worse. I left him a message to see if I could suddenly stopaking them but he hasn’t been back to me yet!
Evening and sleeping is the worst time, I hardly slept at all last night, hoping I’ll be so exhausted tonight I’ll sleep despite the pain and discomfort! Things can only get better! It is slowly improving.
Thanks again. Hope things are good for you now
Ok I didn't know that about Asthma and anti-inflammatory meds. I got Melatonin for sleep, in fact the first one I got I ordered from Amazon. The GP has now prescribed it. They start on the lowest dose which is 2 mgs, but she did say I could take 1 and a half tablet. I have had insomnia for a long time off and on. Did you get the leaflet on arm exercises. If the Macmillan nurse hadn't reminded me I wouldn't have started so early. I take a low dose antidepressant as an anti-anxiety. I am a carer for my son as well when he is home. Don't suffer in silence. People on here helped me get through it in those early weeks.
I take melatonin IR/XR which is immediate and extended release and it is 1.5mg. I take it sometimes not every night and it helps. I wake up groggy but when I see the sun wake up quick. Works for me.

It helps you to get to sleep, airline pilots take it. I wish I'd known about it when I was on nights as a nurse. They won't always prescribe it, I'm over 55 yrs now and they will prescribe for people in this age group. You can buy it online. It's a naturally occuring hormone.
