I am due to start Chemotherapy on Monday 15th September.  They took my bloods on Monday and told me they will only call me if there is an issue with them. I have read that there is normally an ecocardiogram check done too to check the heart, they didn't mention this - when I rang back to ask they checked and just said I didn't need one.

I am having 3 x EC and 3 x Docetaxel - (3 week cycles) - I am 45.

Has this been the same with anyone else.

Good news - I had the PICC line fit this AM and it didn't hurt at all.

  • Well done on getting your PICC line in - always one step at a time.

I believe the Echocardiogram is to check your heart if you’re going to have Trastuzumab (also called Herceptin). I have this as I’m HER2+. but if you’re not having this drug you probably dont need this heart check

    Good luck with everything.

  • Hi I had my chemo in February this year. I didn’t have an ECG before starting either. I had exactly the same drugs as you’re about to have. The best advice I got was to keep a diary of each cycle as a pattern usually emerges and you get to know what to expect and how to deal with it. I hope all goes well and believe me it is all manageable. Just listen to your body, do as the team ask you and  get advice when you need it . If your team is anything like mine you’ll be in safe hands! Take care x

  • Hi

I agree with SusanHB. If you are HER2 positive then the Herceptin can effect the heart function and you need regular echocardiograms. I am HER2 positive and have had to date 14 Herceptin jabs and about 5 echocardiograms. My heart function readings are still normal and at my last check I was told that if you have a problem it usually occurs after the second or third treatment.

  • Thanks everyone for the reassurance.  I'm just so paranoid they are going to find something else wrong with me...even though there is no reason for me to believe this.

I'm glad everything is working well for you.

thanks for the reassurance re chemo. I'll try to clear my mind and be open minded and positive.
