Hi,
I found out I had breast cancer in September, with the original plan for a lumpectomy + radiotherapy + hormone therapy. Further information required for a second area of concern. The MRI has shown multiple lumps and a potential node. The lumps are the same cancer and a further fine needle aspirate of the node has shown abnormal cells. I'm having a mastectomy and the removal of 10-12 nodes next week, with the potential for further surgery depending on the results on the nodes taken. The post op plan hasn't been confirmed yet - I haven't asked and it hasn't been mentioned as I assume it will depend on the post surgical results.
I'm finding it difficult to keep getting not so good news and a changing plan. How have you all managed to keep positive with frequent changes? Has anyone had positive nodes and still just had radiotherapy? How long after surgery was it before you saw an oncologist?
I have an elderly and unwell mother and have chosen not to tell her my diagnosis, but I won't be able to hide things if I need chemo. Have you any advice regarding flying/time away during treatments - There is only so long I can put off a visit and I keep wondering what I can do if anything were to happen to her.
My questions were forgotten when the surgeon rang today to confirm next weeks surgery after the last test.
Thank you,
Hi LuckyD
Welcome to the forum and I am sorry to hear that you have been diagnosed with breast cancer. I suggest that you ring your breast care nurse and ask them your question about flying/time away during treatment. They should be able to give you advice. You are right in that the post-op plan won't be confirmed until they get the post surgical results.
I know how you feel about getting not so good news as that happened to me a couple of times. I've kept myself busy while I have been waiting for the various tests and results.
Wishing you the best of luck with your operation and with your post-op results.
Best wishes

Hi, I agree with Daisy about checking in with your medical team about travel. I was feeling well enough to holiday in our camper van about 3 weeks after my lumpectomy surgery and I flew to the US about 4 weeks after radiotherapy. I didn’t travel during chemo due to the risk of infection. Hope that hElps give you some perspective. Best wishes
