I'm having a hard time believing that herbs are safe to take,
I've been advised to try sage, tumeric & pollen extract called femal ( vit e in it )
My research says -
Turmeric reduces the effects on tamoxifen
Sage is an osteogenic .
And vit e can also reduce the effect on tamoxifen.
When I spoke to a pharmacy they said they are fine because they are herbal.a herbalist said they are safe.
But I can't rid my mind of my research
Specifically it says foods to avoid , tumeric,
That their have been things seen on a cellular level with vit e more reccurence
Sage is a known estrogenic
Does anyone take these things?
Hi Etna , I share your concern, I used to take various supplements to help with menopausal symptoms when going through my ‘natural’ menopause, but now I’m in what I call a supercharged menopause due to Anastrozole, I don’t take anything as I’m not sure what’s ‘safe’. I use turmeric in cooking and I think that’s fine, but wouldn’t take it in concentrated form in a supplement. The only supplement I take is a Vitabiotics calcium and vitamin D one, to counteract the bone thinning effects of the Anastrozole. Others might have researched this thought and may have information to offer. It’s a difficult area, the other advice I’ve seen is to ask your oncologist but in my case I’ve only seen him twice and my annual follow ups are with a surgeon, which I think is pretty standard. Sorry can’t be much help!
Might be worth looking at the Penny Brohn website? They do lots of complementary stuff, alongside conventional treatments, so might have info on herbs. Will be interested to see other responses. HFxx
It was menapause clinic who told me,they said just buy it off the shelf, not really any advice on quantity
When I look into it I've no idea what strength, they all have side effects, penny brahn I've not asked yet, so I think that is probably next route to go down.
It may that taking it in food form is better, like a once a week thing,
Cheers,
Hi Etna, I would check with your oncologist or breast care nurse about supplements and herbs. I tend to only read what is on reputable sites like Macmillan, breast cancer org, cancer research etc. some of the others I have no idea where they get their information from. Somethings there are interactions and I know grapefruit is one to avoid if having tamoxifen.
I haven’t really been avoiding any foods as when I have asked he has said there is nothing to really avoid. Eat things in moderation and if you want to have the odd drink then fine.
We have had to go through so much why make ourselves suffer more by not having the things we enjoy?
Everyone is different and we all have to do what we feel is right for us. Live life to the full, we only get one opportunity

Hi Etna, as others have said you should check with your oncologist but I can share with you that my oncologist told me not to take any supplement other than a multivitamin, oil of evening primrose, vitamin D and a probiotic for gut health. He specifically warned me off sage and black cohosh or anything that worked by raising estrogen levels x
I've already asked her she knows nothing , it's not her area of study I think she said,
The menapause clinic has a breast oncologist who alongside menopause specialist suggested them, but as others say they get warned off ,some say yeah.
I phoned up to Neil's years, wild oats got warned off sage,
But yeah a pharmacist/ medical herbalist said they are fine, sage & tumeric are not estrogenic plants,
But sage is well known for estrogenic property
So it frazzles me
