Hi, I’m about to start tamoxifen as I have finished my chemo and radiotherapy. Bit nervous as ready side effects of blood clots and allergic reactions seem to be 1 in 10 Slight frown

Just wondered how people had got on with this drug?

Thanks cuffcake x x x x x

  • Hello, I too am about to start Tamoxifen, am looking for positive stories re side effects.

  • Hi Ruva, I’ve been taking tamoxifen since May last year and so far have experienced hot flushes. I did have an achy hip but that has gone, not sure if it was related to the tablets. Different manufacturers makes have different fillers. I have found 2 that work well for me but I do have difficulty getting hold of those 2 at times.
    Wishing you all the best

  • Can I ask what brands you like? Swapped from letrozole after 4 years (never thought I'd manage that long!) and worried about tamoxifen:/ I have the Mylan brand to start with.

  • Hi Londonmumof2, I have Mylan and Wockhardt. These are the only brands I can tolerate as the others all have an ingredient in that I react too. I do find Mylan difficult to get hold of here and the pharmacy will only look at there stockist so when I called Viatris who do Mylan they were very helpful but couldn’t give me names. They suggested I ask the pharmacy to call them and they would discuss. However the pharmacy I was going to did t want to, so I have changed pharmacy

  • Thank you for the info, I will lookout for the different brands and see how I get on.

  • I have been on tamoxifen for 3 years. My initial side effects were like flu symptoms for a few weeks. After that things settled down and I don’t notice anything now., apart from a bit of fatigue and night sweats, but that’s also likely to.be menopause. There are side effects with everything and for me it’s the lesser of two evils. Your BCN  should be able to advise on the side effects you are naturally concerned about, but leading an active life with good diet helps me keep quite well.

  • I can't get Mylan anywhere I've tried a few pharmacies.. this was the first one I took and I really liked it and didn't have any side effects, now every time I get my prescription I'm given a different brand as they can't seem to stock the same one for more than a few months Disappointed  I've had them all, Crescent, Milpharm, Tilomed (this was alright too but out of stock now) RelonChem and Wockhartd.....  frustrated.

I've been taking tamoxifen for 14 months now but side effects didn't really kick in til recently - my joints are so stiff particularly in the morning I'm like the tin man till I've had a shower and walked around a bit, weight gain, brain fog, I constantly think I've forgotten or lost something .... Thinking.  the joys!!

  • Thank you!

  • Thank you for sharing. I started taking it yesterday(Mylan brand). The pharmacist said they will call me in a week to see how I am getting on. I may throw in about the different brands in the conversation and ask to be kept on same brand that suits me once I’ve established that.

  • My knee was much worse on Letrozole. I already had some effects of ageing on my knees and spine. I feel these tablets pick it up and make it flare up maybe. I am determined to keep dancing even though I'm slower now and sometimes have to stop. I'll be dammed if I'll go through all this to let it decide what I do. I take antihistamines which seem to help with pain. I have some osteoporosis and have treatment for that. I'm just about to start Bisphosphonates by ivi route. The side effects don't make good reading but the worst ones are rare apparently. We need some fun and it's so in short supply at times. Xxxx
