Having a miserable time on  Letrozol, Joint pain, mood swings, hot flushes. brain fogg etc.etc. Its been suggested to go onto Venafaxine, which is an antidepressant.

Has anyone tried this? does it help? Can you become reliant on anti depressants? Its a dilemma as to know what's the best thing to do.

This is all new to me diagnosed Feb 23, a road I didnt expect to be on, not sure if I will be returning to work when this is all over. Didn't plan to retire yet, all plans totally shattered. Lost! Sad!

  • Hi Chrissi, I have been taking Anastrazole and recently been prescribed fluoxetine which is an antidepressant,  I certainly feel better whilst taking them....I have had them  before so I know that they work for me. I tend to 'forget' to take them after while and then I know I don't need them anymore.  But I think these things work differently for everyone.....different brands etc.

I personally think its worth a try.....you should be monitored by your gp, they usually suggest when you stop taking them you should do so gradually to ensure you don't have any unwanted side effects.

It's a hard road you are on.....it will get better...in my experience.  I hope you are able to reach a decision that is right for....hugs x

  • Thank You Chocolate Chip, your answer helps. Just coming to terms with the situation and adjusting my outlook.

Its good to know it will get better, just need to change direction. I'll give the antidepressant a try and hopefully I will also experience some relief. I'm hopeful happier times will return.

I appreciate your reply and wish you well. Thank You .

  • I stuck out the mood swings for almost 2 years after going into medical menopause with goserelin implants and exemestane. I did loads of research myself and went to the doctor to ask for anti-depressants. I've been prescribed fluoxetine and take the lowest dose. It has done wonders for anxiety, sleep, flashes of anger, sudden weepiness etc. I would recommend trying them.

I started them on one every second day in the morning but found they made me very sleepy, so I swapped them to the evening which works well for me.

Fluoxetine has a very long half life, which means it's easier to come off them than some other anti-depressants, but it would all be done gradually anyway. My Dr said if you are taking them for anxiety/depression then they like to keep you on them for 6 months after you feel yourself again to ensure no relapse, But as I'm taking them to counter the effects of hormone therapy, then I think I can stay on them, and I don't think a low dose does me much harm, given the other drugs I take also alter my mood.

You have to be careful with antidepressants if you are on tamoxifen as they can interfere with it.

  • Thank You Beatthebreast (love the tag) That's encouraging, good to know the antidepressants help.

Was reluctant to start taking them but all indications are that they help and I need some relief from this right now.

Thank you for your reply and the reassurance. Its good to know we are not alone on this difficult journey.

Wishing you well, kind regards. xx
