Hi, I had a Picc Line fitted the morning of my first chemo cycle. The lovely ladies who fitted it mentioned that if you lift your arm above your head, your heart will flutter. It settles once you bring it down.
My question is, do you stop doing the excercises (particularly the ones where you raise your arms above your head) the breast care nurses give you to do 3 times a day to prevent lymphodema? I tried asking the breast care nurses, but they didn't know!
I don't want to end up having to have the Picc line re-sited because I've moved it, but I don't want to end up with a frozen shoulder or lyphodema.
Hi Natty, whilst I don’t have a PICC line I have an arm port which in theory does the same thing and can have chemo and bloods taken from it.
It was put in my right arm which is my good arm and that I didn’t have my lumpectomy and axillary nodes removed. I was advised not to have the line put in the same side as my lumpectomy and axillary clearance. I was advised not to do the exercises with my right arm, just do my left arm on its own which is what I have been doing. I do lift my right arm above my head from time to time as I use my right arm as normal but I have never experienced any heart flutter from the arm port which also has a line that goes through the vein round to the heart. Maybe this is different in the case of a PICC line as it exits your arm where the port is internal and doesn’t have any cannulas outside.
Have they put the PICC line in the side you had your lumpectomy? If they have it seems strange unless you had to have lumpectomy’s to both breasts.
If the PICC line is opposite side then I would have thought it would be ok to continue the exercises but the person to really ask would be the ladies who fitted your PICC line. Maybe you would be able to contact them to double check perhaps your chemo nurses could give you their contact number or email address if you don’t have it.
Wishing you all the best for your journey.

Hi Cuffcake, thanks for replying. I have the Picc Line on the other arm as I had a couple of nodes taken from my left side. I've been doing the excercises on the non Picc line side, but obviously don't want to end up getting lymphedema or having to have my Picc line re-sited because I've moved it doing the excercises (they measure the line each time the do a dressing change to make sure only a certain amount of cm's are outside the body... )
I have searched online, but can find no info. I think I will ask the breast care nurses for the picc line department number for some clearer guidance.Just wondered what everyone else was told to do.
Feeling disappointed as my blood results show my neutrophils are too low for me to have my 2nd cycle of chemo tomorrow xx
Hi Natty, sorry to hear you can’t have your chemo tomorrow because of low neutrophil’s. Do you have to inject yourself with the pegfiligrastim or filgrastim? These help with increasing your blood count and preventing neutropenia.
Yes have a chat with the breast care nurse and see if they can give you the picc line department number. They should certainly be able to clarify for you. I didn’t realise they measure a picc line everytime they changed the dressing. Gosh I think I would be worried every week if I had one of those incase it had moved. I guess they have a certain amount it’s allowed to move before they do anything.

Did you have your picc line fitted at unit where you had picc line fitted? I did. Maybe ask at unit.
