Letrozole effects

My oncologist told me to stop Letrozole immediately when my joint/nerve pain became pretty intolerable - I’ve been off it 6 weeks now but the pain is still in my arms albeit slightly better. Dr has just prescribed amyltriptiline hoping it will make the pain tolerable enough to start a new hormone blocker. I really hate taking these tablets - anyone else had the same experience? The pain is better than it was -  it felt like my elbows had been hit with concrete lol! I guess it takes ages for the Letrozole to get out of your system …

  • Sounds awful Sandy and hope it gets better soon as nerve pain is terry.  I have been on Anastrazole for almost a year snd side effects are tolerable.  Bad dry mouth but a lovely lady on this site told me to try xyli melts and they help a lot.  I get some hot flashes and muscle aches too but still continue with my routine and exercise too so not too bad.  Hope they can give you something that you can tolerate.  I wish I didn’t need to take them but I realize that they are important.

  • Thanks so much for taking the time to reply and giving me something to think more positively about - anastrozole is what they want me to try next - I will think more seriously about it rather than deciding to take nothing

good luck to you as well and well done persevering with itClap

  • I was worried about the side effects of Aromatase inhibitors but my medical oncologist told me that most of his patients taking it did well and were able to manage the side effects.  Hope you will be better on the Anastrazole.

  • Hi Sandy

I was in a similar situation about 18mths ago on letrozol and said to onc I thought I would maybe have to give up driving. She switched me to exemestane. She did warn that it might not be any different in its effects. Also said it might take three months for letrozol to wash-out of my system. It took a while but I have definitely felt an improvement. Hands are a lot better with almost no swollen fingers or aches. Also knees and ankles. I walk about 40-50km per week over a few days and find I do best on the days I get out and get moving. Hope your onc gets you sorted Fingers crossed

    All the best to you

    1. That is so encouraging to me especially to hear it may take 3 months for the Letrozole to clear and that’s why I’m still getting pain. I do lots of exercise too and am determined it won’t stop me. It does sometimes help the pain too as you say. Perhaps I’ll bite the bullet and try the new treatment (anastrozole)Blush
  • My knee problems preceded Letrozole. I think the Letrozole has picked up what was already there. I have noticed in the past that stress triggers inflammatory conditions or areas that have been dormant. Loratidine helps inflammation I have been told a few times. My knees are painful going upstairs but get better over the day. Exercise definitely helps, gets the synovial fluid moving around the joint one physio told me.

My lovely aging black Lab has hip problems he still runs around when he is outside, forgets it. He has the dog version of ibuprofen.
