Hello all,
I’m due 18 sessions of radiotherapy in the not too distant future. I do not have dates yet as I am still waiting for my oncology appointment.
I have been told that I will have to go to Mount Vernon Hospital for the radiotherapy. This is two hours away from where I live in Hertfordshire. I wouldn’t feel comfortable driving and the thought of travelling all that way on my own is daunting.
I don’t have anyone who can take me and I wouldn’t expect family or friends to do it as most of them work. Plus I do not have the money to use public transport and the journey each way would take six trains in total.
I’m getting myself so worked up at the thought of the journey.
Do you think I could ask them to send me to a hospital closer to home? Thank you in advance for your advice.
I would definitely ask if it was possible to get a hospital nearer to you. You can apply for hospital transport. Also might be worth checking locally if you have any local schemes for taking people to hospital. You could also phone MacMillan as they have lots of useful contacts. This is the last thing you need when facing extensive radiotherapy. My hospital was only 30/40 minutes away and my husband took me but even that was tiring so you will be exhausted. I am sure an alternative will come up and definitely raise it at your oncology appointment. Try not to worry as I am sure it can be resolved.
Thank you I will definitely look into the transport and ask my oncologist if there are any alternative hospitals closer to me.
It’s a nightmare having to worry about this on top of everything else. Hopefully I will get it sorted.
You just don’t need that at the moment. Me and my husband used to be volunteer drivers where we used to live and quite often took people to hospital.I just feel two hours is too long.
Hi Valleyside , I am sure you can ask to go to an alternative hospital so do check which ones nearer you have that facility. I am also in Hertfordshire and did go to Mount Vernon but it was within an hour’s drive so ok. But I asked at my oncology appointment whether it would be an option to switch to Addenbrookes as I knew the route better. I was told definitely yes I could switch but when we discussed it I was also told that it might delay my treatment as I was already in the Herts system but would have to ‘start again’ if I switched to Addenbrookes as it’s in a different trust. I didn’t want further delay so I stuck with MV. In the end I think the journey was a bit shorter anyway. I think you can tell if a hospital offers radiotherapy by searching its website so you could research that now. I’d contact the breast clinic too to discuss it to maybe speed things up.
Sorry you have this worry on top of everything else. Love and hugs, HFxx
Thank you for your reply. I am going to call the hospital Monday. I’ve looked at Addenbrookes and that is roughly a 45 min drive from me.
I just don’t know how they expect people to do the long journeys for radiotherapy.
I’m also concerned about driving myself, as I don’t know how tired I will be, if at all. I know it affects everyone differently.
It isn’t just the radiotherapy treatment, it is the stress of the whole procedures you are going through. I found my concentration wasn’t great so definitely would not have fancied driving myself.
