Hi, just had biopsy today on armpit. I have metastases in liver & spine. Looking for primary cancer. Mammogram clear of breast cancer. Hopeful they will get enough cells to diagnose.Top runners are occult breast cancer or lymphoma. Anyone else had difficulty getting a diagnosis?

I'm waiting and wondering on a lung cancer diagnosis. Never smoked.

The waiting is really hard isn't it? How are you feeling? I feel awful. I don't want to upset my children and cry. I can't frighten my 2 youngest.  Have you an appointment soon?  I hope you get a diagnosis soon x x

  • That’s tough for you - when will you get diagnosis? I have an appointment in 10 days & hopefully they got enough in the biopsy to diagnose. If not they’ll have to do a liver biopsy.

  • Have you got a diagnosis yet? I’m still waiting & going out of my mind. Had a biopsy done but not confident they will have enough material to diagnose which will mean another biopsy. Slowly going mad & the pain isn’t helping.

  • Hi, I’m really sorry to read your situation. The waiting is torture. I did get a diagnosis, so am not really answering your question, but I remember a lady who had chemo at the same time as me. We chatted a few times. Like you, she had found a biopsy in her armpit (nothing in breast). I assumed (wrongly) that she had lymphoma, until she told me the name of her consultant - it was the same as mine. So I asked her if she was being treated in the Breast Clinic. She said she was. I couldn’t get my head around this until I read how far breast tissue extends away from the breast. So she had breast cancer in her armpit, with nothing in the breast. Once she had her diagnosis (which was not long after the biopsy) she started on chemo, and responded very well as it happens. She also had radiotherapy, but started that just before me.
With respect to the pain whilst waiting for diagnosis, I had this. And yet I had no pain pre-finding something and having the tests. My GP prescribed me some prescription pain relief, and it helped. Strangely, the pain disappeared after diagnosis (I started chemotherapy just over a week later). For me, I guess that the pain was being caused by extreme stress. But the point I am making is that you do not have to be in pain, and your GP might be able to help you too. Xx

  • Thank you so much for your considerate reply. I’m in bits today but that really helped. I’ve had liver and back pain since October which is where the metastases are. I know some of the pain is in my head & it’s not terrible just reminding me constantly.

Thanks once again I feel a bit more cheery now .

  • Still awaiting diagnosis. Nothing found in armpit. They are still convinced it is occult breast cancer. Cancelled MRI is being reinstated from a month ago (never discovered why they cancelled it). They seem reluctant to do liver biopsy although I thought that would be the obvious next step. That’s a question for Monday. I think I’m going to be dead before I get a diagnosis, if indeed I do. Struggling. I think if I didn’t have to work, I’d fall apart completely but that can be a challenge too.

  • I am so sorry you are going through this awful ordeal. The waiting is unbearable for you especially as our brains go into overdrive.  It shouldn’t be long now before your MRI and results then hopefully your team will have a plan of treatment. Just know that there are many on here rooting for you so keep us posted. Take care. Xx

  • Im not surprised you are struggling. It’s bad enough when you have a ‘peg to hang your hat on’, but to not yet have a diagnosis is very hard. Have you spoken to one of the MacMillan nurses on the phone support line (number on the website)? I did this a couple of times, when I needed some extra clarification, context, or mental support. Xx

  • Yes the helpline was very good. I just think this is going to go on and on as I’m not sure the MRI will be definitive as I I think they need actual cells to examine. I’ve calculated every ‘intervention’ takes at least 15 days ( this is what my head calculates in the early hours).
Off to shop for nice food, top up the painkillers & have a nice day. Thanks for replying.
