I finished chemo 4 weeks ago, and I could no longer find the lump I had originally felt at the start of treatment. I was told chemo had shrunk it from 2.5cm to 4mm.
I’m having lumpectomy in just over a week, but am concerned that I can feel the lump again, it seems as if it’s grown back…has anyone else experienced this? Hoping the surgery will get it all! I’m also having radio after surgery.
Thanks in advance
Hi KC88, not quite the same as I didn’t have chemo to shrink mine but thought it might help knowing my tumour was 35mm and was removed successfully with a lumpectomy so even if it grows a bit before surgery, it’ll hopefully be smaller than it would have been had you not! I’m now having chemo and will also have radiotherapy.
im sure all will be fine, good luck!
I also had chemo before surgery and the great thing about it is that you know it is working as your lump shrinks!
I was told the optimal time between chemo and surgery is 4-6 weeks so you are bang on. I ended up having my surgery at 4 weeks after chemo as my original surgeon could only do the surgery at 7 weeks and they asked if I would swap, on the advice of the oncologists.
That suggests to me that they expect the possibility of it growing again - but any sooner than 4 weeks and you won't be recovered enough from chemo.
I have to confess that I didn't feel my lump after my last appointment with the surgeon after chemo and before surgery - they were delighted with how much it had shrunk, which was good enough for me.
I had a successful lumpectomy with clear margins.
Thanks for your reply…reassuring to hear a successful lumpectomy
I actually had an ultrasound today to have the magseed marker inserted before my upcoming lumpectomy, and they showed me the before images and that they now couldn’t actually see any sign of the tumour today in the ultrasound so I’m relieved!
best of luck with chemo and radio

Hi, thanks so much for replying
Yea was great feeling it shrink to basically nothing, just freaked out a bit last night feeling a lump again
However, I had an ultrasound today for a magseed marker and they said they could not see anything on the screen, actually found it difficult to locate the 1st marker they put in! It’s definitely put my mind at ease, must have just been lumpy breast tissue I felt
great to hear you had clear margins! I’m hoping for the same

So pleased to hear that Kat! Good luck with the op!
