Cool cap

Hi everybody, I'm starting my chemo next week. I've had a bad week seeing the oncologist and discussing my treatment plan. I was asked if I wanted to consider the cool cap regarding hair loss, I was looking for some advice like is it worth it. I will have to spend more time there I don't know if it's worth doing. I am starting weekly chemo for 12 weeks and as I'm her2 positive have to have the injections alongside the chemo. I forget the name of it, info overload. I feel like my head is going to explode today! Thanks again for the support, all the best in love and peace, unagh xxx

  • Hi Unagh I used the cold cap last year and was lucky and kept most of my hair just had 2 go faster stripes at the sides where it didn’t sit right that went a bit bald. Yes it does increase the time you spend in the ward but I was fortunate to meet some lovely people, patients and nurses that helped pass time. There’s nothing to loose by giving it a try that’s how it was put to me. Once you get past the initial 10 minutes of cold it’s really not bad. Good luck .

  • Hi Unagh

i started cold cap 10 days ago and so far haven’t lost any hair although I know it’s early days. I’ve quite thick hair so didn’t find it that bad at all (was told the thickness of the hair acts as barrier)

the first half of it the nurses were back and forth administering the different drugs so that flew by. I then had 90 mins after where they left me but I took a good book and that soon went quickly!

id say give it a try, you can always decide against it for the remainder of the treatments if you find it unbearable.

I also have the injections which I do for 5 days from day 3 after each treatment. I found grabbing your belly further round the side made it hurt less and actually, could barely feel it after the first couple!

    good luck!

  • Thanks kaybel that's helps a lot to know that. I have quite a lot of hair and was thinking it may help a bit. Good luck to you too

  • Hi shellbeck24. Thanks for advice. I think I'll try it for first time and see how I go. My first injection has to be in hospital and takes about 40 minutes. I think it's some kind of hormone injection I need to read the info again. Good luck unagh x

  • It’s definitely worth trying. A lot of people liken it to brain freeze for 10 mins then you get used to it but I didn’t have that and wouldn’t even say it was uncomfortable. Oh that does sound different to my injections but you’ll be absolutely fine, you realise when having this horrible decease how resilient you become! Hope all goes well x

  • This is me after 4 rounds of EC and 12 weeks of Paclitaxel - the silver is regrowth which started during Paclitaxel even though the dark hairs are still coming out which is odd. It’s very very thin on top, as it that of most of those I have made the journey with but having a fringe in itself is handy with hats/caps.  I only finished this week and had what was left trimmed as it had got very thin and mad professor looking.  When I get more regrowth on top I’ll go for a buzz so it’s the same length all over.  It’s strange but I never thought about how a mix of some tensing hair and new probably curly growth could work.  I had a long Bob before. My head gets very cold so I’m rarely without a nibble hat even inside at the moment. I didn’t find the cold cap too bad and stuck it out - I’ve kept around 30 per cent of my hair.

  • Hi Labradorlover

thats so good to hear the good results of the cap, I hope mine is as successful! You look so well! I’ve got 4 EC and 4 paclitaxil and it’s encouraging to know the re growth might start before the end!

hope it all worked and you’re healthy now!
