Has anyone had a lumpectomy when they have a cold?

I went for pre-op on Friday, mentioned I had a cold to 2 nurses but stupidly not the one filling out the paperwork. It is only today as i read the pre-op paperwork that i see you're supposed to tell them as it might mean the surgery gets cancelled.

I have called and left a message. But i was curious of other peoples experiences.

Google tells me anestesiologists don't like colds for obvious reasons. But for something like a lumpectomy that is a relatively short operation, doesn't usually require intubation etc it's not always a massive issue.

I am due to have surgery in 4 days, the nuclear dye in 3 days. Usually i'd expect a cold to have gone, or certainly be a lot better 2 weeks after it began, but with chemo everything drags.

I'm just not sure if they'll say 'what do you want to do?', and i honestly have no idea!

  • I have had anaesthetics with mild cold symptoms. I think if your chest is clear you should be fine. Good luck.

  • I think the anaesthetist makes the call on the day - I’ve had major abdominal surgery with the tail end of a chest infection but they checked out my breathing pretty thoroughly - I was intubated for that.  I think you should give them a call but hopefully it will be ok for you …
