Hi everyone, I’m due to start my radiotherapy in 2 weeks ( I’ve had my planning app) but I’ve read about keeping the skin moisturised. Does anyone have any recommendations? I tried E45 but it made my skin feel itchy and a bit spotty. I’ve been using bio oil on my scars and they are healing great.

I think I also read somewhere about massage afterwards? Any advice would be really appreciated, I’ve had a really tender, hard lump since surgery but it is now starting to soften and I can now manage to sleep a bit better. I’m small busted so most of the breast was affected by the swelling.

Thank you x

  • I was advised to use Aveeno moisturiser.  I did ask whether I should use it on the days I had radiotherapy and was told that it would be fine to do so if my appointment was later in the day having moisturised in the morning.  I didn't have any problems but maybe you could call your BCN for advice.

    Best wishes.

  • Hello First good luck with radiotherapy. I used Aveena moisturiser it worked well I am fair skinned and was worried about my skin breaking down.It survived x15 session I got a couple of very red patches and more after I finished in June. I still massage and moisturize as even now things have tightened up where I had treatment and are a bit uncomfortable. They did say it can happen.. I also used Pure Aloe Vera which I kept in the fridge it was very cooling and stopped places itching, this was after completed treatment. I was told not to use bio oil or moisturise before a session but ok to moisturize after but no oil till completed course. I used it twice a day. Hope this helps lots of love xxHeart

  • Sapphire thanks you for your reply,  I wondered about Aveeno, I’ll get some today.

  • Popular choices are Aveeno and Moo Goo

Avoid putting it on less than an hour before treatment but use it a couple of times a day.

Dont soak in a hot bath during treatment. Shower and pat the area dry with a soft towel. Try and wear soft cotton crop top type bras and looser clothing with nothing too tight under the arm to rub you.

    Drink lots of fluids

If your skin gets sore during treatment( not everybody does) your team can supply creams and dressings.

    Hope all goes well

  • Thanks Jane, I’m going to pop and get some Aveeno but that’s a great tip about the Aloe Vera in the fridge. I just want to feel prepared, so I’m ready for anything  unexpected.
My skin is already dry from menopause and now I’m taking Letrozole so I’m expecting it to become drier still x

  • Thanks so much for your advice, it’s great to have help from people who’ve been there. I’d read about drinking lots of fluid, Is it right that it can help with the tiredness?

  • It can help to flush out any toxins produced by cells breaking down so just generally make you feel better x

  • I used Aveeno too, which was great. My radiologist said it doesn't prevent a skin reaction, but moisturising does help prevent your skin drying out which in turn helps stop you itching it and causing issues.

I used bio oil for my scars too, but you can't use it during radiotherapy or for at least 6 weeks afterwards (until you have healed). I stopped using it about 1 week beforehand. Any oil on your skin will make the radiation more likely to burn you and cause a reaction

  • Thanks so much, I’ll definitely be making sure I drink plenty. Sue

  • I didn’t realise about the bio oil. I’ll stop using it now until I’m well healed from the radiotherapy.
I know they give you the booklets but this group has really helped me with all the unanswered questions that are going around in my head.
    thanks so much x
