Hi all
so, I hadn’t given the lymphoedema issue much thought at all, even though they rammed home how hard this is to treat when I had my anc. I’ve been so focused on my relapse stats and high risk prognosis that it didn’t really register. Anyway, I’ve now come away on holiday after radiation and have an insect bite on that side…I remembered they said not to let this happen and had a quick google and realised lymphoedema is actually quite a horrible thing and not just a bit of a swelling and that a fair portion of breast cancer survivors go on to develop it so now I am stressing over this as well.
has anyone had cuts/bites etc after ANC and did you develop lymphoedema? How long did it take etc? Anyone had them and not develop it?
thanks
It’s hard but…try to relax and enjoy your holiday. I’ve been to Spain twice this year and had a couple of mosquito bites on my right (ANC side) arm. No lymphoedema as yet.
Keep it clean and do everything you can not to scratch (easier said than done). It’s possibly the scratching and breaking the skin there that’s more of a risk. I used an antiseptic post bite pen thing the first time and then Savlon which is my go to for any minor skin wound.
Maybe when you get back - because you’re gonna be busy enjoying your holiday in the meantime - take a look at this which has a guide to regular exercises you can do to try and prevent it…

Yes I have had insect bites and no I haven’t developed lymphoedema - the key is to keep any cut/sore/bite/burn as clean as possible as the risk is from infection. I have a kit to keep with me - insect repellent, antiseptic wipes, hydrocortisone (to stop itching), antiseptic cream and plasters. Then I know I’m ready. The kitchen is another high risk area - I’m drilling my family to keep away from me when I’m prepping and cooking and not to distract me or push past me to reach things. I hope you do ok.
Just a little tip re insect repellants. Avon’s Skin So Soft is brilliant for repelling insects and it also leaves your skin feeling lovely. It’s an oil but not greasy at all. Discovered that the British Army use this when on manoeuvres and use it as an insect repellant. Well worth keeping some in store cupbard. By the way I share your fear of lymphoedema, I think we all do. Just enjoy your holiday.

Amazing tip, but can you clarify is it Avon's Skin si Nice (which I can't find) or is it Avon's Skin so Soft?
I don't have lymphedema but have a friend who has some in her thighs (cancer left over) and it is horrible. She has started a local support group. Good luck to everyone on this thread and again thank you for the tip.
