Macrometastasis

I had WLE and sentinel lymph node biopsy on 1st August. Got the histology results last week and was told I needed completion axillary node clearance as cancer cells were found in the SLN. I had this surgery today. I'm ok but my discharge letter says I needed this as SLNB was positive for macrometastasis. WHAT DOES MACROMETASTASIS MEAN??

I'm hoping someone here can reliably clarify this for me.

Thanks everyone.

  • I hope you'll be fine, good luck with your surgery, try to ask your doctor before it.

  • Hi sparkle, I had macrometstasis in 2/3 SLN. I don't know a huge amount but I know that it refers to the size of the metastases in the lymph nodes. Micrometastases are a cluster of cancer cells smaller than 2mm and macrometastases are larger than 2mm (but the size is not specified). I had additional axillary nodes taken out after chemo to check for any more cancer cells, and thankfully all were clear. The focus (from my doctors at least) was on the number of nodes that were positive rather than the size of the cluster of cells.

Maybe someone else can provide further info or as Cassy said, you could ask your doctor.

I hope your surgery went well and you recover ok x

  • Hello Sparkle bright, I hope that your op went well. My SLNB identified that I had macrometastasis in a lymph node and my oncologist said that this relates to the amount of cancer cells found. Like you I also had a full axillary node clearance and one out of the 30 lymph nodes removed had cancer cells in. The results from the clearance wilI help to determine your treatment plan but as already been suggested, speak to your nurse or oncologist and they will be able to explain more to you. Good luck with the rest of your treatment x
