Permanent Alopecia

Good morning,

I just wondered if anyone has suffered any form of permanent alopecia following a regime of EC x 3 and docetaxel x3 with hormone and herceptin treatment as well.

I am only 5 weeks post last docetaxel but there are no signs of the initial fuzz which you would expect within 3-4 weeks and, after reading several alarming reports about the possibility of permanent alopecia on this treatment regime, am concerned that I may be one of the seemingly, increasing number of people who are left with this.

I would love to hear from anyone who has any experience of this and any ideas of how to stimulate hair growth would be gratefully received.

Best wishes to everyone going through their treatments, I just have radiotherapy to do now, and hugs to you all.

  • Hi don't be too impatient (easier said than done I know bless you.) I finished similar treatment on 1st April and only now have enough hair to go wig less even now the front seems to need to catch up with the back. After years of fine straight hair it is returning curly and I don't know how to handle curls. Don't want to use products other than gentle shampoo and conditioner or heat on it so just rub it gently with a towel and leave Like you it seemed to take a

while to begin to grow. I didn't expect anything for 3 weeks as it never grew between cycles of chemo. Picture taken 4 months after treatment ended.

I really hope it returns but it may take time good luck to you with all you have been through its the last thing you want but hopefully it will come xx

  • Thank you so much for your reply, it gives me some hope that I may have my own hair growing again in the future.

Your hair looks really lovely, and you seem to be managing the curls really well. It must have been a bit of a surprise to have the curls after having had straight hair before though.

Like you,I have only been using simple shampoo and conditioner on my few remaining hairs as I'm not keen to use too many chemicals.

Thank you again and all the best.

  • My hair didn't really start taking off until between months 3 and 4 following docetaxel. I did have some white fuzz, but I got that during docetaxel treatment, it didn't grow once I'd finished. And not everyone gets the fuzz. Mine was very slow to start growing back and then was slow growing for a very long time

  • Thank you Beatthebreast.

That is also reassuring. I don't find information from the breast care team very forth coming and it can be more helpful speaking to people who have been through the process themselves.

Take care and all the best xx

  • Looks beautiful and love the curls too.

  • This is me at 8 weeks after chemo finishing so you can compare. Don't worry it should come x

  • Thank you Janemb.. It's very kind of you to share your photo and gives me some hope for my own hair. I have let the little patches that I do have grow long so that it looks as if I have some hair under my hat, but without the hat, I look similar to Gollum from Lord of the Rings.

  • When the rest begins to peep through get a hairdresser to even it up for you maybe then it will grow the same all over x
