Hi, I had two rounds of EC, and 4 of Dovertax all. I lost my appetite on the latter. I could quite easily have not eaten anything for about 10-12 days of each cycle. Most strange never to feel hungry. But I did force myself to eat to maintain strength and healthy blood counts. I didn’t gag or wnything, and always ate what was on my plate. As I say, I just never felt hungry or craved any foods. Remember also that your dose of chemo is calculated on your weight. Several times in the chemo room I saw people who were told that they couldn’t have it that day because they had lost more weight than recommended.
I hope that this is helpful. Best wishes
I forced myself to eat 3 meals a day. I couldn't always finish them, but made sure I ate healthy things. Your cells really need fuel to recover from the chemo - they have got a battering and can't recover without nutrition. I found soups were my saviour. Plenty of nutrients, easy to eat and lots of fluid.
Thanks for this , this is exactly how I feel im not hungry or do I miss food but I do know for my health I will need to force myself to eat to be able to feel better , I have lost about 6lb in as many days so let's hope by my next cycle the weight has gone back on ....take care xx
Thankyou its nice to know your not alone , I feel really bad because I can't eat and my family are always saying you must try, but it is the hardest thing to do .....
I lost my appetite with chemo too - I think it was partly fatigue, partly anaemia, partly effects on my gut perhaps. I was advised to eat small amounts often and treat eating like medicine and take it in a prescribed way. Also eat protein at every meal to maintain your strength and not lose muscle bulk. You could make smoothies and add full fat yoghurt and some plain protein powder for example. Or snack on a handful of nuts which are packed full of protein. Eggs are good and soft food like scrambled eggs is easy to eat - I found a bit of ketchup suited my chemo taste buds. Adding red lentils to soups thickens them and adds protein. Or treat yourself to some more luxury items to tempt yourself - eg prawns or avocado. It does get better but if you can, eat to maintain your strength and help with the chemo fatigue. x
Thanks zephyr its very hard finding the right food to tempt me , anything I try is just so bland and makes me not want to eat anything ....i know I have to eat because I have no energy ... fingers crossed my appetite will soon come back ....
It is really hard when you don't fancy anything and food is boring. I found mild curry, a generous squeeze of lemon juice (if I was eating fish), tomato ketchup, extra salt all helped, though I agree some things just don't taste right, or even of anything at all. I did get a bit of a taste for carrs melts - a type of cracker that was quite well seasoned. I liked the plain ones and they go down really easily. Quite good for snacking on when you are tired. I hope you can find a way to eat a bit more to restore your energy levels. Your appetite will come back in the end, it is only temporary. Thinking of you x
