3rd lumpectomy or mastectomy?

Briefly. Stage 1 grade 2 diagnosis in Feb. 10mm size. Had a lumpectomy and SNLB (clear) and results said it was 15mm and 34 mm of pre cancerous cells.  No clear margin in one area but Downgraded  to stage 1 grade 1.

2nd lumpectomy 7 weeks ago. Better recovery. Feeling good.

Results today: took 5 mm to get a clear margin but discovered another true cancer mass of 3mm and 15mm of precancerous cells

I though I was heading straight to radiotherapy but no. I have to decide if I go for another lumpectomy with/without  some extra side fat to make it look better. Or a mastectomy (got a leaflet). Have to decide by Monday,  and have literally no idea. Now my head is mashed and I’m trying to sort out my teens without letting on.

Lone parent with no support though work have been good.

Has anyone else been in a similar crap boat?

    1. I had two lumpectomys (an excision then second excision as margins weren't clear the first time) I was offered  that I could have had mastectomy the second time.  I'm glad I had a second excision as it was clear of any cancer cells.

It depends if you are willing to try a third excision as I expect they have said you may need a mastectomy if its not clear. If you went for mastectomy at least you would know its going to be the last op for sure but it depends how much avoiding mastectomy  means to you. I really wanted to avoid mastectomy.

Good luck with what you decide xx

  • Thanks for your reply Bobbiboo. Sorry you had to have two excisions. No fun. Glad that you didn’t need any further surgery though.

I do have choice and ‘m not sure there’s a lot of difference in the overall long term outcomes. Im Going to call into my nearest Maggies centre  tomorrow and see if someone can talk through the options as I’ve forgotten most of what was  said today.

    1. I’m leaning towards a third lumpectomy. if that isn’t clear then I guess I’ll have the mastectomy. Pah!
