This is my cocktail of drugs, due to start next month. 3 sessions each of EC and Docetaxel, then a year of Herceptin injections, plus radiotherapy.  Does anyone know why these two different drugs are used?  Why not EC all the way through?  It is a question I am going to ask at my next appointment but just wondered if anyone had asked it before.  I can see that for my type of cancer (HER2+ ER-) Herceptin is good at targeting this so understand that but I am concerned about Docetaxel as some of the side effects look horrible and I don't want to be left with more problems after treatment.  I was Stage 1 Grade 3, they got everything out and there was no spread so very lucky I know.

  • I think they use a mix of chemo as each drug works in a different way. I'm sure someone will tell you the official medical reason, but most people seem to have a mix of drugs.

My cocktail was 3 EC, 9 paclitaxel plus Herceptin.

  • The different drugs attack the cancer cells in a different way. There will have been lots of research trials to show which drugs work best. My combination was EC-P, but my tumour was ER positive HER2 negative. Paclitaxel and docetaxel are in the same class of chemo drugs - I don't know why some use one rather than the other.

  • Hi
bio is on profile if you want to read

my original plan was EC x3 then docetaxel x3 followed with Herceptin x 18 also bisphosphonate infusions x 6over three year hopefully last treatment in June .

Docetaxel was removed from plan on first appointment with onco ,this was because of my previous bowel problems which had led to resection .

    So I was put on EC x 6 .

Both EC and Docetaxel affect different people in different ways .I have read on here of people who felt better on Docetaxel than on EC and vice a versa .

Personally I managed on 3 EC far better than some then cumulative Side  effects kicked in for last 3 .I was offered a change at no 4 but I stuck with it .

I don’t know the medical reasons for the mixes but everyone one reacts differently and so can their cancer so have a discussion with onco so you can both be happy with plan

One step at a time and ...Breathe !
