Invasive lobular and chemo

Hi.

I have recently finished 4 months of chemo and waiting for 2nd excision as the margins weren't clear on the wide excision in November before chemo.

I read on one of these threads that invasive lobular has a poor response to chemo. I cant believe it after 4 months of chemo.  I hoping the margins are clear on the next surgery and thought the chemo in between  must help.

Has anyone else had chemo for invasive lobular?

Thanks xx

  • Hi Bobbiboo,

I am having chemo for invasive lobular cancer and also read about lobular not being very responsive to chemo so I did a lot of debating before deciding to go ahead , I have had 3cycles and 3 more to go but as my tumour was removed before I started chemo will not know if it has benefited me . I really hope you have a good response . Keep us posted and I will be keeping everything crossed for you .

  • Thanks.. I was given a choice about chemo I was just told I needed it.

    Maybe the response is variable?

  • I had invasive ducal. Tumour removed, clear margins, lymph notes clear. However, as mine is/was hormone responsive, chemo is a given, plus hormone injections for 1 yr, plus RT. Wasn't really offered a choice, to try and prevent a recurrence.

  • Hi. It seems that DCIS is more responsive to chemo that lobular , I didn't realise that before chemo

  • It may be a little less responsive but the nhs simply wouldn’t give it due to cost and patient burden if there was likely to be no benefit. It will have done something for you. Xx

  • Thanks.  I hope so xx

  • Hi I have been having treatment for invasive lobular breast cancer and am 1 Chemo cycle in of 6. Will then have radiotherapy after a few weeks break. I previous had 2 surgeries one in Jan this year and one in Feb. My lymph nodes were involved 4 out of 10 removed. I asked oncologist direct question, do you think I am a good case for Chemo. The ans was yes. I am ER +  so will be given hormone treatment eventually. Also HER negative. Quite specific how they target the therapy required to each person as each case can be so different. My tumour was 2.5 cm on removal. I could have have radiotherapy following first op but as lymph nodes involved went for 2nd op then Chemo. All the decisions each step of the way are really difficult. All the best with all your treatment and recovery going forward.

  • Hi Busy life

Thanks for your reply that's really helpful l. It sounds like your situation is very similar to mine.

I had local wide excision  and lymph node clearance in November , ER and PR postitve and HER negative. Had 6 out of 13 lymph nodes affected.   I've had 6 cycles of chemo 3x EC and 3 xDC . I have 2nd op next week for further excision to try to get clear margins.  I'm hoping they will be clear after the chemo .

Was your second op a further excsion / cavity shave or mastectomy ?

    Thanks xx

  • Hi, 2nd op was an axillary lymph node dissection (ALND)  or clearance. Its aim to remove any nodes within the area close to the cancer, that contain cancer cells. The first op did get the tumour plus a margin. Good luck with your forthcoming op. My chemo planned as the same type as yours for tge first 3 tge EC and chemo 2 is a weektoday all being well. This is not what we had planned for 2022!

    Take care. x

  • Thanks sounds like we are on a similar path which is useful to compare.

     Good luck with your chemo
