Good morning I am new to this chat as I’ve had a recent diagnosis of grade 2 breast cancer which requires a mastectomy early next month. I previously had DCIS 5 years ago and had a lumpectomy and radiotherapy then but unfortunately it’s come back. I’m okay about the surgery my main concern is the hormone treatment afterwards which is anti-oestrogen. I was on HRT and I had oestrogen gel and progestogen tablets which had just started to really help. Now that’s got to stop and I’m going to go straight back to where I was before in fact worse than what I was before. I’m dreading my libido being non-existent after just getting it back. I know getting breast cancer treatment is more important than my sex drive but I just wondered if anybody had got any advice or holistic treatments that might be able to help?

  • I am so sorry about your news and wish you all the best for your surgery. You are quite right to raise this question - quality of life is so important. Liz O'Riordan did a great podcast on sex and cancer. You can ask your oncologist about vagifem. It is quite low dose and will stop your nether region drying out. It is a discussion to be had for sure. Your GP can prescribe moisturising creams like the "yes" creams. There is an excellent chapter in the book by two doctors - Liz O'Riordan and Trish Greenhalgh on this important topic that few wish to discuss openly! The complete guide to breast cancer is the name of the book. I am not sure about holistic treatments, but I hope these thoughts are a place to start.
