Hi,

I was just wondering if you are undergoing breast cancer treatment that you are exempt from paying for prescriptions?   I received a letter from my consultant and one of the things mentioned in the letter is that I am exempt from paying for prescriptions, how do I go about getting a certificate?  Many thanks.

You need to get a form from your GP which you complete and return to them to sign. They submit it and you get an exemption card posted to you which you show when you collect your prescription.

  • Hi, yes, you definitely are exempt, but I must admit my medical exemption card just arrived in the post.  I think perhaps ask your GP about this.

    • Hi, yes you are exempt from paying. Just either ask your gp or oncologist for a form, fill in send off and you get it, you are then exempt for 5 years xx
  • I was given a form to fill in on the day of diagnosis, handed to me by the breast care nurse. I filled it in on the spot, gave it back to her, and that was that.

  • My breast nurse sent me the form already completed. Only helpful thing she's done. I just signed it and sent it off. Came quickly. You can still sign your prescription as exempt whilst you wait for card. Think its a faff to claim back. It last 5 years so if there is anything else you need then get your GP to write you a script! • I did mine via my gp, just got the form and then gave it back to them x

Is this for any prescriptions or just relating to cancer meds? Does anyone know if it includes private prescriptions too? X

  • Hi GillyT The exemption certificate is for NHS prescriptions, only, not private, but covers any prescriptions for 5 years. You will need to complete form FP92A which as others have already mentioned is available from your GP and oncologist or ask your breast nurse. Mine gave me the form and also stamped/signed it. The card came through quickly, within 10 days.

  • Many thanks for your reply.  I went to my GP surgery this afternoon and completed a form so hopefully I will receive my card in a couple of weeks time.
