Prosthetic - basic vs fancy

I have found this forum so helpful over the last few weeks. I feel I have really turned a corner in my recovery, but I would have struggled so much in my difficult times without the benefit of the discussions here.  It is so important to be around women with a shared experience and I a grateful to everyone who posts here.

I would really appreciate hearing about women's experiences of getting a prosthetic.  I had a single side MX three weeks ago and I understand I will get an appointment to get fitted for one eight weeks post op.  I have bought an excellent comfy bra from Amoena and I received an email from them publicising their fancy Adapt Air forms.  If you buy them they are expensive, but the information says that you can request one on the nhs.  What has anyone found in terms of whether an old school weighted one is best over all or if a high tech one is a fast improvement?  I am very new to all this and don't know anyone who has had a similar experience.  Can anyone share their thoughts or point me in the right direction for information please?

  • Hi  my story is on profile feel free to read  if you wish .

I had right side MX in 2019 my experience was that prior to op I met prosthesis lady who provided me with a softy prosthesis which I wore on way home from hospital and if I was out and about in the next 6 weeks .
I then had an appointment with her to get my prosthetic . Her room was like a shoe shop with boxes around the walls ..all full of boobs Joy all shapes and sizes Joy

She had advised wearing a white top so I could see shape with clothes on which is different to what you see in underwear . I tried a few but settled on one  which came home with me . I call her Clarissa and I’m am more than happy with her she is just part of my dressing routine .

So what do you need to know ….the above service was all free on NHS even had replacement after 2 years on request because my nail caught it .

Yes in your hand they do feel heavy  but once in bra against body it feels no different to other side . It also does not move but stays in bra pocket whereas the softy used to ride up .

I used M&S bra also online Nicola Jane initially but now I buy bra pockets online and stitch them into my usual bras .
Personally I would try the NHS prosthetic to see how you feel about it first ..things could have changed but I wasn’t aware you could get an air one on NHS .

    hope this helps

  • Thanks so much Margaret. That is helpful (especially the reminder to breathe). Do you run or do any sports?  Would Clarissa work well for that?

Hi glad it helped …well sports and running a big yes in the past Athletics , netball ,squash unfortunately age caught up 72 yr and counting so ….walking became my sport then cancer arrived ( 2019)  followed by covid lockdown . I’m now trying to get back some fitness treatment hopefully finishes in June .

I think Clarissa would be fine particularly if you get sports bra . If you get NHS for daily use and she doesn’t like running it might be worth buying a sporty Clarissa lol Joy
