Mirtazapine for hot flushes/night sweats - weight gain

Hi

I had to stop taking my HRT last June 21 when I was first diagnosed. I then struggled terribly with night sweats and insomnia so my GP prescribed Mirtazapine in early October. The tablet is 15mg and I actually only take half the dose and it's improved my sweats/flushes and as long as it's not the day of chemo or a couple of days after I sleep reasonably well too.

However it's seen me put on 16lb in weight since taking them. This is a side effect. I know I may have put weight on since chemo started in early October but it just seems to be piling on. Since Christmas I've consciously been watching what I eat and walking everyday and the scales go up not down. I hate having this extra weight and with 3 more chemos to go I want to begin getting some level of fitness back.

Has anyone moved to a different anti-depressant that has helped with night sweats? I've heard women mention Citalopram which could be an alternative.

  • Yes they make you very sleepy.

I didn't get on with them at all and eventually tapered off them.

Some antidepressants are not as sedating.

Some cause a little weight gain but not as much as Mirtazapine.

Dr never tell you how much weight Mirtazapine can put on you..

A discussion with your GP would be good.

    Good luck x

  • I've just been prescribed this but only half a 15mg tablet as and when needed to help with my insomnia. I know it is an anti depressant but I didnt want to go back on them. I've only had one dose but still feel a little off today. Will see how it goes. Good to see how others have been affected x

  • I’m not on the same drug as you now but I put on a lot of weight with chemo, I didn’t eat any more, often the opposite or I picked at things but I put on 2st! When I started chemo I didn’t have enough body fat at 8st 10 but by the end I had enough for a diep, I grew my own boob on chemo!! I went up to 10st 10, it’s gradually starting to come off. I needed to gain a bit but I was surprised I put on so much, my breast consultant said it was common that BC patients put on weight with treatment. I’m not suggesting a change might help in your instance but just sharing my weight gain experience x

  • I don't take it myself, but thought I'd mention that lots of women take venlafaxine for hot flushes - it's apparently very effective, and totally safe/compatable for those of us with hormone-sensitive cancers.

It seems to have fewer side effects than mirtazapine, but does need to be weaned off very slowly when stopping it.

Ask your GP or onc about it?

  • He's when I speak to him on the 16th I plan to ask for an alternative.

I did welcome the sleep that Mirtazapine gave me during chemo but definitely need something else now.

I also think it's caused my swollen ankles too.
