Hi, seen a couple of threads recently about NHS v private, I was diagnosed via the screening programme and all appointments and surgery has been with NHS hospital about an hour from me which has been fine, I really like the consultant so happy to do the journey’s, I had a lumpectomy two weeks ago and yesterday went for my results and have been lucky that it was picked up early stages and clear margins in the surgery so just recommended radiotherapy for me next. The radiotherapy is done at a different hospital which again is about an hour away but a nightmare to get to and park at, has anyone switched to having radiotherapy privately? I have medical insurance through work and have found a place not far from me although I have no idea at this point how to do the switch from NHS to private or even if it it’s a good idea to switch now, any thoughts?
Hi, it might be worth asking your consultant if they also take private patients, which would make a switch easier?
Hi I did radio privately .. you can switch to a consultant radiologist that will follow you for the radio at that hospital. In any case it's a different person from your surgeon. I would call the insurance company and see if they cover that hospital, are ok with it and who you can book in to see there. You can then speak to your consultant and ask him to refer you. Axa for example have a specialist cancer team so they are very knowledgeable if you call them so I guess the other insurance companies will have the same? I don't think it would be a problem to switch now as the radio team will update your consultant with the treatment you have done and you can go back to your NHS consultant after the radio to continue follow ups.
I would discuss it with your oncologist as in these covid times, they may be using spill over hospitals and you might be able to go there anyway if you request it.
We have 1 main radiology hospital near me but a satellite NHS one was built recently that is far closer and I was able to request to go to that one. Have you checked whether there are any nearer NHS ones?
Failing that, some good suggestions have already been made.
Thank you for your replies, I have checked out nearest NHS hospital and they don’t do radiotherapy there but told me the private hospital they used to use in the same town which I know is covered by my insurance co. I will see if I can speak to my consultant again to discuss as I assume they would have to refer me anyway it was definitely one of those times I should have taken a list of questions but completely forgot !
I use ‘notes’ in my phone, every time something occurs to me I jot it down on the note, then before I leave the consultant I just run through it, nobody has ever objected x
Bit of a tech phob , have never actually looked at the notes bit on my phone, I even keep my appointments in paper form I must try and get a bit more up to date x
